According to royal biographer Robert Jobson, Prince William sought assurances from Queen Elizabeth II that Meghan Markle would not wear jewelry from Princess Diana’s collection. That is a reported account of a private conversation—not a publicly confirmed ban. The distinction matters: Meghan has worn jewelry associated with Diana, and Harry said Diana’s diamonds were included in Meghan’s engagement ring.
What Robert Jobson’s book reportedly says
The allegation is attributed to Robert Jobson’s biography Catherine, the Princess of Wales: The Biography. Marie Claire reproduced Jobson’s wording: “I have been told that, still concerned about the [romantic] match, he’d sought assurances from the Queen that Harry’s bride would not be wearing any of Princess Diana’s jewellery, even though his own wife was allowed to wear it,” Jobson wrote. The Independent also reported the allegation, describing the account as connected to Catherine’s being allowed to wear some of Diana’s jewelry because of her rank (The Independent).
Jobson’s phrase “I have been told” makes clear that he was recounting information he said he received. Neither report independently establishes that the conversation took place, or that the Queen or William issued an order. The sources do not identify specific pieces Meghan supposedly sought to wear or establish that an actual refusal occurred.
What is—and is not—confirmed
- Reported allegation: Jobson’s account says William sought assurances about Meghan wearing pieces from Diana’s jewelry collection.
- Not publicly confirmed in the cited coverage: William, Queen Elizabeth II, and the Palace have not been quoted confirming this specific conversation.
- Separate direct interview context: In 2017, Harry said Meghan’s engagement ring included diamonds from his mother’s collection. Meghan said the connection was meaningful because she had not been able to meet Diana (TIME). Those comments do not verify the separate allegation about wedding-period jewelry.
These are different kinds of evidence: a biographer’s attributed account of a private conversation, a couple’s public explanation of an engagement ring, and later reporting about jewelry Meghan wore. One does not prove or disprove the others.

Meghan has worn jewelry associated with Diana
The allegation should not be broadened into a claim that Meghan never wore Diana’s jewelry. CBS reported that Meghan wore Diana’s diamond bracelet during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey (CBS). That later appearance does not establish what happened around the 2018 wedding, but it is a clear counterexample to the idea that she was categorically prevented from wearing Diana-associated pieces.

Jobson’s biography brought the allegation into news coverage in 2024, several years after Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding. Vanity Fair revisited Diana’s notable jewels in 2026 and repeated the claim with attribution (Vanity Fair). Repetition in later coverage remains reporting of Jobson’s account, not independent confirmation of the alleged private exchange.
