Playboi Carti and Ariana Grande each reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, but the available chart reports do not establish that they competed for the top spot in the same week. Grande’s petal debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated August 15, 2026; Carti’s MUSIC had a separate No. 1 run in 2025. The latest chart listing consulted, dated October 7–13, 2026, instead has Taylor Swift at No. 1.
What the Billboard 200 measures
The Billboard 200 ranks album popularity in the United States using traditional album sales, track-equivalent albums and streaming-equivalent albums. The Official Charts Company describes it as Billboard’s main U.S. albums chart. Official Charts Company chart listing

Ariana Grande’s petal debut
Hypebeast reports that petal opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated August 15, 2026, with 295,000 equivalent album units for the tracking week ending August 6. The outlet attributes the figures to Luminate. Its reported components were 168,000 album sales, 126,000 streaming-equivalent album units and 1,000 track-equivalent album units. Hypebeast
Hypebeast also reported 96,000 vinyl copies sold in the launch week and coverage of vinyl, CD, cassette and digital variants. These are launch-week figures; they do not establish current stock or which editions remain available. The release date, July 31, 2026, and label information were reproduced by Game On Media from a label-provided release announcement. Game On Media

Playboi Carti’s separate No. 1 run
Playboi Carti’s MUSIC also had a No. 1 run, but in 2025 rather than during petal’s reported August 2026 debut. A secondary reference reports a 298,000-unit debut and a return to No. 1 for a third week. That figure should not be treated as a directly verified Billboard comparison with Grande’s launch-week total. Wikipedia contributors’ entry for MUSIC
Were the albums in a head-to-head chart race?
The chart evidence available here does not identify a specific Billboard 200 issue in which MUSIC and petal were competing. Their separate No. 1 achievements do not show that one beat the other: a meaningful comparison would need the same chart issue and tracking week, along with comparable unit totals and sales-versus-streaming components.
Rank #2
Nor should either past result be presented as the current chart position. The Official Charts Company listing consulted for October 7–13, 2026 names Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl at No. 1. Official Charts Company chart listing
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the reported totals
- Album sales: purchases of full albums, including eligible physical and digital formats.
- Streaming-equivalent album units: a chart-equivalent measure derived from streaming consumption, rather than a count of albums sold.
- Track-equivalent album units: a chart-equivalent measure derived from individual track purchases.
Because the Billboard 200 combines these measures, a headline total is not the same thing as album sales alone. The reported 295,000 for petal includes the three listed components; its sales component was 168,000.
