Pink Floyd’s music catalog sale to Sony Music was reported in October 2024 at approximately US$400 million. The reports described a deal covering the band’s recorded-music catalog and name-and-likeness rights, while excluding songwriting and publishing rights. Sony had not publicly confirmed the reported price or terms in the contemporary coverage.
What was reportedly sold?
Music Business Worldwide reported on October 1, 2024, that Pink Floyd had agreed to sell its recorded-music catalog to Sony Music. The Guardian reported the deal the following day, and Variety also reported an approximately $400 million transaction.

The reports described the assets as including rights in the band’s recordings and name and likeness; Music Business Worldwide also specified neighboring rights. Variety said name-and-likeness rights could cover uses such as merchandise and theatrical projects. The reporting identifies the sellers as Pink Floyd’s rights holders, rather than establishing that the band members personally sold every relevant asset.
What did the reported deal not include?
The reports said songwriting or music-publishing rights were excluded. This distinction matters because a song can involve separate rights in its sound recording—the particular recorded performance, often called the master—and in the underlying musical composition and lyrics. A transfer of recording rights does not, by itself, mean that the buyer acquired the composition rights.

The Guardian said songwriting rights were not part of the sale; Variety said songwriting remained with the individual writers, and Music Business Worldwide reported that publishing rights were excluded. It would therefore be inaccurate to say Sony bought all rights to every Pink Floyd song.
How firm is the $400 million figure?
Approximately US$400 million is the reported transaction value, attributed in contemporary accounts to sources familiar with the deal—not a price publicly disclosed in a Sony announcement cited by those reports. Earlier coverage had discussed a higher asking price or a possible figure around $500 million; those reports should not be confused with the later reported agreed amount. Music Business Worldwide and Variety reported the approximately $400 million figure.

Music Business Worldwide also reported that Pink Floyd (1987) Limited and Pink Floyd Music Limited together recorded £40.399 million in revenue for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023, equivalent in its account to about US$50 million. That is a combined company revenue figure for that fiscal year—not the sale price, a disclosed valuation formula, or catalog profit.

The cited October 2024 coverage did not provide a public Sony announcement confirming the transaction’s price and terms. The Guardian reported that Sony had not issued a statement or responded to a request for comment as of its October 2 article; Variety likewise reported that Sony and band representatives did not confirm the deal in response to requests.

Sony Music’s May 2025 announcement for Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII lists vinyl, CD and digital audio formats, including Dolby Atmos. Separately, Sony Group’s FY26 first-quarter supplemental information, published in 2026, lists the project among its top 10 recorded-music projects for the quarter ended June 30, 2025; a footnote says the project totals aggregate album and digital-track exploitation. Neither source states the 2024 catalog deal’s price or confirms its reported scope.
