The available evidence does not prove that Netflix’s What Jennifer Did used fully AI-generated images. The documentary was accused of showing AI-generated or AI-manipulated photographs of Jennifer Pan after viewers noticed distorted hands, teeth, facial features, earrings and backgrounds. Executive producer Jeremy Grimaldi said the photographs were real but that their backgrounds had been edited to protect the source. The precise editing workflow—including whether any generative-AI tools were used—has not been established publicly.
What is the controversy about?
What Jennifer Did is a Netflix true-crime documentary released on April 10, 2024. Directed by Jenny Popplewell, it examines the case of Jennifer Pan, who was convicted in connection with a 2010 murder-for-hire attack targeting her parents in Ontario, Canada. The film uses interviews, police-interview footage, photographs and testimony from people connected with the case.
The controversy concerns several images of Pan shown at approximately the 28-minute mark. At least one similar image was also reportedly used in promotional artwork. Technology publication Futurism argued that the pictures displayed visual hallmarks associated with generative AI. Other coverage highlighted apparent defects in hands, facial features, teeth, jewelry and background objects.

That evidence supports an allegation that the images were materially altered. It does not, by itself, establish whether they were generated from scratch, edited with generative software, processed using AI upscaling or face restoration, composited conventionally in Photoshop, or distorted by later compression and reproduction.

Why did the images look AI-generated?
Viewers and reporters identified several apparent anomalies:
- A hand that seems to have malformed or missing fingers.
- Facial features that appear warped or anatomically inconsistent.
- A front tooth that looks unusually long or distorted.
- Earrings that appear mismatched or physically implausible.
- An apparently incorrect nose or surrounding facial detail.
- Background objects that seem melted, morphed or inconsistent with a normal photograph.
These are familiar warning signs in synthetic imagery. Image-generation systems have historically struggled with hands, teeth, jewelry and small background details. However, the same appearance can result from other processes. AI-based restoration can invent fine detail while enlarging a low-resolution photograph. Generative fill can replace a background. Face-restoration software can alter eyes, teeth or facial proportions. Conventional compositing can also produce mismatched edges and lighting. Heavy compression, scaling or a damaged source scan may exaggerate defects.
For that reason, visual inspection is a reason to investigate—not conclusive proof of which tool was used.
What the producer said
Jeremy Grimaldi, an executive producer of the documentary and a journalist who had previously written about the case, disputed the characterization of the pictures as AI-generated. As reported by Futurism and other outlets, he said the photographs of Pan were real and that the foreground depicting her was “exactly her.” He explained that the surrounding background had been anonymized to protect the person who supplied the images, and referred to editing tools such as Photoshop.
That is an important distinction. His explanation does not say that the final images were untouched originals. It says that real photographs were edited, particularly in the background, for source protection.

It also leaves several material questions unanswered:
- What software, plug-ins or automated tools were used?
- Was generative fill used on the background?
- Were Pan’s face, hands, teeth, clothing or jewelry altered?
- Was the final image created from one photograph or a composite?
- Does the production still possess the original source file?
- Why was the alteration not clearly explained to viewers?
- Did Netflix review the image-making process before release?
As Engadget reported, the public record does not provide a clear technical account of the workflow. Netflix distributed the documentary, but the available reporting does not establish that Netflix itself made the images or approved a particular editing method.

What is confirmed, alleged and unknown?

The most accurate description is therefore: What Jennifer Did was accused of using undisclosed AI-generated or AI-manipulated images, while its executive producer said the images were real photographs edited to anonymize their surroundings.
AI-generated, AI-assisted and conventionally edited are different claims
The controversy is often reduced to the phrase “AI images,” but that phrase can describe very different processes:
- Fully generated image: An image created from a prompt or reference without using an original photograph as the underlying record.
- Generative alteration: A real photograph changed through tools such as generative fill, object replacement or automated facial editing.
- AI enhancement: Upscaling, denoising or restoration that may invent visual detail.
- Conventional manipulation: Cropping, retouching, compositing, background replacement or other editing performed without generative AI.
- Anonymization: Altering an image to protect a source or participant. This may be ethically justified, but it still changes what viewers see.
A real photograph can pass through an AI-assisted workflow without becoming a wholly AI-generated image. Conversely, a photograph can be heavily manipulated with ordinary software and still mislead viewers if it is presented as an untouched archival record.

Why the issue matters more in a documentary
Documentaries rely on an implied relationship with reality. A photograph shown in a true-crime film is not merely decoration: it may appear to document a person’s life, appearance, surroundings or emotional state at a particular time.

If an image is synthetic or materially altered but presented like an authentic snapshot, viewers may infer that the depicted setting or moment existed exactly as shown. In this case, critics argued that the images helped construct a contrast between Pan’s apparently ordinary or cheerful life and the serious crime described by the film. That interpretation should be attributed to critics; the available evidence does not prove that this was the filmmakers’ intention.
The ethical question is not whether documentary makers may ever edit images. They may need to protect a source, remove identifying details or repair damaged archival material. The question is whether the alteration changes the evidentiary meaning of the image and whether the audience is given enough information to understand that change.
The Archival Producers Alliance guidance reported by PBS emphasizes transparency, preservation of source material and protection of the historical record. Its concern is practical as well as ethical: synthetic material can be detached from its original context, recirculated online and later mistaken for genuine historical evidence.
How legitimate anonymization differs from fabrication
Anonymization can be justified when revealing a source’s identity could create a safety or privacy risk. Lower-risk approaches include:

- Blurring or pixelating a face.
- Using a silhouette or cropped view.
- Showing only non-identifying portions of the image.
- Replacing a background while preserving the subject and disclosing the alteration.
- Using a clearly labeled dramatization.
- Altering a voice with an on-screen explanation.
Higher-risk approaches include generating a photorealistic image of a real person, changing facial or bodily features without disclosure, creating a composite that looks like an authentic snapshot, or using synthetic material in promotional artwork without labeling it.
The more an alteration changes the apparent historical content of an image, the stronger the case for disclosure. A background anonymization is not necessarily equivalent to fabricating the person in the foreground, but neither should be silently treated as an untouched photograph if the difference matters to the viewer’s understanding.

Pan was convicted in connection with the attack on her parents and was serving a life sentence when the documentary controversy emerged. Subsequent Canadian appellate proceedings resulted in a retrial-related order because the original jury had not been given appropriate lesser-offence options. According to reporting summarized by the available case history, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld that retrial-related ruling in April 2025.
A retrial order does not establish innocence. It does mean that the legal status of the case requires more precise language than simply calling Pan “a murderer.” A careful description is that she was convicted in connection with the attack, while later proceedings affected the status of the original conviction.
That distinction matters to the image controversy. A documentary about a real person involved in a legally contested case can influence public understanding long after release. Synthetic-looking imagery may shape a viewer’s impression of the person independently of the narration, evidence and court record.

Were the images disclosed as AI or dramatizations?
Available coverage says the suspected AI use was not disclosed in the film’s credits. That is narrower than saying the film contained no disclaimer anywhere. It is also different from claiming that the filmmakers explicitly represented every image as an untouched original.
The relevant transparency questions include whether the current version of the film identifies altered images, whether the opening cards or end credits explain the anonymization, and whether promotional artwork is labeled when it materially changes a source photograph. The sources available for this article do not establish a detailed answer to those questions.
The absence of a clear public workflow is significant because a viewer cannot reliably distinguish among a genuine photograph, a restored scan, a composite, an anonymized image and a generated reconstruction merely by watching the film.

A definitive conclusion would require more than a visual comparison. The most useful evidence would include:
- The original camera file, scan or unedited source photograph.
- The production’s editing project, layer history and export history.
- A list of software, plug-ins and automated image tools used.
- Production notes or a post-production vendor statement.
- Credit and disclosure records for the film and its marketing materials.
- A frame-by-frame comparison between the source and final images.
- An independent forensic analysis that explains its methodology and uncertainty.
- A direct statement from Netflix or the production company describing the workflow.
Metadata alone would not necessarily settle the question. It may be stripped during export or altered by later editing. Likewise, an AI detector cannot independently prove which tool created an image.
How viewers should assess similar allegations
When a documentary image is accused of being AI-generated, viewers can apply a simple evidence test:
- Separate appearance from provenance. A strange hand or tooth is an indicator, not proof.
- Check the film’s disclosures and credits. Look for terms such as recreation, composite, dramatization, restoration or anonymization.
- Distinguish the claim. Ask whether the allegation concerns full generation, AI-assisted editing, conventional retouching or image enhancement.
- Compare reputable sources. A different archival image may show that a promotional picture was altered, but it does not reveal the exact workflow.
- Keep the image separate from the case. Questions about a photograph do not prove or disprove the underlying criminal allegations.
- Look for primary evidence. Original files, production notes and a documented technical analysis are stronger than visual speculation.
The narrow conclusion
The images in What Jennifer Did raised credible questions because several details appear inconsistent with an ordinary photograph. The producer’s explanation—that the photos were real and their backgrounds were anonymized—directly disputes the claim that they were wholly AI-generated.
