ABC temporarily preempted the show in September 2025 after Kimmel’s remarks about Charlie Kirk. More than 430 entertainment figures signed an ACLU letter supporting constitutional rights and free speech; that was public support, not proof of a coordinated boycott. Separately, boycott calls and threats were reported.
What happened to Jimmy Kimmel’s show?
On September 18, 2025, ABC said Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be “preempted indefinitely.” The decision followed Kimmel’s September 15 monologue about Charlie Kirk’s murder. ABC News reported that FCC Chairman Brendan Carr had called for Kimmel’s suspension before ABC announced the preemption. ABC News reported the initial decision and its context.
ABC News Australia quoted Kimmel saying that “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalise on the murder of Charlie Kirk” and that “the MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.” Its report includes the quoted monologue.
Disney and ABC announced on September 22 that the show would return the following day, after what ABC called “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel. At the network level, the program returned on September 23. That makes “temporarily preempted” or “suspended” more accurate than a permanent cancellation. The Associated Press reported the return and responses.

What did the stars do?
More than 430 movie, television and stage figures, comedians, directors and writers signed an ACLU open letter supporting constitutional rights and free speech, according to the AP and ABC News Australia. Reported signers included Robert De Niro, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Selena Gomez, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.
The letter’s signatories should be described as supporters of its free-speech position. Their signatures do not establish that they cancelled Disney subscriptions, refused Disney work or called for a boycott. Neither the signatory count nor the named figures are evidence of a coordinated celebrity boycott. ABC News Australia reported on the letter, signers and boycott threats.

How the different responses differed
| Action | Who took it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Network preemption, then return | ABC, owned by Disney | ABC initially said the show was preempted indefinitely, then announced its return after conversations with Kimmel. |
| Local station preemptions | Nexstar and Sinclair | Some stations did not immediately resume carrying the show when ABC announced its return. Both companies later ended their preemptions. |
| Public support and boycott calls | Entertainment figures and members of the public | More than 430 entertainment figures signed the ACLU letter; separate reporting described boycott threats and calls. These are distinct responses. |
Nexstar and Sinclair’s station decisions meant ABC’s network announcement did not instantly restore the program everywhere. ABC reported on September 26 that both companies had announced the end of their preemptions. Nexstar first said it would continue preempting the show pending assurances about “respectful, constructive dialogue”; after ending the preemption, it said it remained committed to the First Amendment and to serving its communities. ABC News reported the affiliate decisions and Nexstar’s statements.
Were boycott calls reported?
Yes. ABC News Australia reported hundreds of complaints to the Australian broadcaster about the US show being pulled, as well as threats to boycott sponsors. Those reports are separate from the ACLU letter and from the decisions by local station groups. The cited coverage does not establish how many people followed through, whether Disney suffered measurable financial effects, or whether the public response caused ABC to bring the show back.

Why “major stars boycotted Disney” is misleading
The phrase collapses three different events into one: ABC’s temporary network-level preemption, local station groups’ separate carriage decisions, and public or celebrity responses. The strongest documented celebrity action was signing an ACLU letter—not a collective refusal to support Disney. ABC’s stated reason for returning the program was that it had held conversations with Kimmel; the reporting does not establish that the letter or boycott calls caused the reinstatement.
