TheWrap reported significant problems with the effort in 2025; in June 2026, Runway announced that Lionsgate had taken an equity interest in the company and that the pair planned to expand their collaboration. The story is better described as a troubled initiative that continued in a changed, broader form—not a confirmed collapse.
What Lionsgate and Runway originally announced
On September 18, 2024, Lionsgate and Runway announced a partnership to create and train an AI model customized to Lionsgate’s film and television content. The stated aim was to help filmmakers and other creative talent augment their work with video they could iterate using Runway’s controllable tools. Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns cited possible uses in pre-production and post-production, describing AI as a tool to “augment[], enhanc[e] and supplement[]” current operations. Lionsgate’s announcement said the studio’s library contained more than 20,000 titles. That company-stated library size does not establish that every title—or any particular number of titles—was used to train the model.
The announcement presented AI as support for creative workflows, not as a plan to turn filmmaking over to a machine or replace entire productions with generated video.
What problems were reported in 2025
In September 2025, TheWrap reported complications involving the limits of relying on a single model, the studio’s catalog, and rights that actors or other contributors might hold. The report drew on people familiar with the situation; it was not a public technical audit or a legal ruling.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The article quoted an unnamed source characterizing Lionsgate’s catalog as too small to create a model. That statement is an attributed opinion, not a published benchmark. It also raised the possibility that generating video of actors saying things they never said could implicate ancillary rights. Entertainment attorney Ray Seilie told TheWrap: “Now that there’s this tech where you can create an AI video of an actor saying something they did not say, that kind of right gets very thorny.” This describes a potential rights complication, not a determination that a specific use violated the law.
TheWrap also reported that Lionsgate described its Runway agreement as non-exclusive and said the studio’s AI initiatives continued on several fronts, including use of tools from other companies. The reporting therefore pointed to obstacles, not a confirmed end to all AI work at Lionsgate.

What changed in June 2026
On June 11, 2026, Runway announced an expanded strategic collaboration. Runway said Lionsgate had taken an equity interest in Runway and that the companies would jointly develop new intellectual property. The first planned project was a short-form episodic series drawing on Lionsgate IP and Runway models.
Runway also said the earlier tools were being used across pre-visualization, storyboarding, and final-frame production. The announcement describes the intended scope and planned work; it does not establish that the series or any other project has been completed or released. Nor does it explain how the copyright and contributor-rights questions reported in 2025 were resolved.

On the available public record, “crumbled into disaster” overstates what is known. There was a reported setback, followed by an announced expansion. Neither the original partnership nor the later plans prove that Lionsgate made a finished AI-generated feature film, and the public announcements do not demonstrate that every technical or rights concern was settled.
