The key is that those leases have not yet become M-Tex property. That closes the immediate question of how Tommy can keep working, but it does not settle who controls the leases—or whether Tommy can survive the deal.
What was the plot hole, and did the finale fix it?
Calling it Landman’s “biggest plot hole” is an interpretation, not a label Taylor Sheridan has used. The concrete gap is what Tommy can do after Cami fires him, especially when Cooper’s productive leases have been brought into M-Tex’s orbit. The finale answers that by establishing that the leases are not yet legally M-Tex’s and giving Tommy a separate company to build around them.
Paramount+’s Season 2 finale recap identifies Tommy’s new venture as CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle, backed by Gallino. Esquire’s recap describes the distinction that makes the move possible: Tommy says Cami did not negotiate Cooper’s lease transaction; he did, and she does not know about it. So the finale does not simply hand Tommy a company—it makes the ownership and negotiation history of the leases the hinge of his escape route.
How Tommy gets from M-Tex to CTT
M-Tex is in trouble after Monty’s death
After Monty Miller dies, Cami takes charge of M-Tex and Tommy becomes its president. Paramount+’s season recap says Monty used money intended for a Gulf gas well to finance Texas wells, leaving the company deeply in debt. Cami later accepts financing for an offshore project from Dan Morrell, who is actually Gallino, despite Tommy explaining Gallino’s identity to her.

Cooper’s leases offer another foundation
Cooper secures productive leases through Sonrisa, which has Gallino’s backing. Tommy initially brings the leases into M-Tex and puts Cooper to work under him. But the finale stresses that the transfer is not complete: M-Tex does not yet legally own the leases, and Cami was not party to the negotiation. That leaves Tommy with a possible business asset outside the company that has just fired him.
The new company creates a new risk
After Cami fires him, Tommy teams up with Gallino and forms CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle. Paramount+ presents it as a family enterprise involving Tommy, T.L. and Cooper, while the arrangement puts Tommy’s family at risk if the venture fails. Gallino’s money supplies a route forward, but it also gives him leverage over Tommy.

Why the finale’s answer is only partial
Tommy has an immediate next step, but the finale has not settled the business questions that determine whether it will work. Tom’s Guide’s finale review notes possible future conflict over Cooper’s leases, including a challenge from Cami or a legal dispute. Paramount+ also frames M-Tex and CTT as potential rivals.
- Lease control: the finale’s distinction between Tommy’s negotiation and M-Tex’s legal ownership creates room for a dispute.
- Financing: Gallino’s support comes with a threat if the venture fails, not a risk-free investment.
- Competition: CTT’s growth could put Tommy directly against Cami and M-Tex.
That makes the finale a resolution to “what does Tommy do now?” rather than a full resolution of his financial, legal or family stakes. Tom’s Guide streaming editor Malcolm McMillan called the finale something that “saved an uneven season of television”; that is one critic’s judgment, not a consensus.

Would Tommy’s business move work in the real oil industry?
The Houston Chronicle’s Landman fact check spoke with oil-industry veteran Ted Borrego and landman Russell Smith about the show’s business premise. Their comments suggest a split: a landman starting a company is possible, but cartel-backed oil financing is a heightened fictional device rather than a typical route.
- Starting a company: Smith and Borrego said landmen do sometimes go out on their own. The safer and more likely path, they said, is working for an established public or mid-sized independent company.
- Cartel investment: Smith said, “But I don’t know that I know any cartels that have funded oil and gas companies.” The Chronicle’s experts characterized that funding premise as unlikely.
- Offshore risk: The Chronicle also reports that Gulf of Mexico offshore wildcatting is not commonly done and that substantial research precedes a decision. Borrego said, “Frankly, you don’t do it overnight just because of the dollars involved.”
In other words, CTT’s breakaway-company idea has a recognizable industry parallel; the speed, financing source and surrounding threats are the show’s dramatic escalation.
