Public accounts do not establish that Kit Culkin made a sustained effort to reconnect with his children after their estrangement. Macaulay Culkin has described decades without speaking to his father, but he also recalled a past exchange in which Kit asked why he was being cold. That recollection shows some interaction; it does not establish when it happened, whether Kit contacted his other children, or whether the relationship resumed.
What Macaulay Culkin has said about contact with his father
In April 2025, Macaulay said on the Sibling Revelry podcast that he had not spoken to Kit in “about 30-something years,” according to The Independent. He also characterized the family rift by saying that none of Kit’s children or four grandchildren wanted anything to do with him. That is Macaulay’s account, not an independently verified statement from every relative.

A separate account complicates any simple claim that Kit never tried to speak with him. In November 2025, Us Weekly recounted Macaulay’s Deadline interview: Macaulay remembered Kit asking why he was being cold. Macaulay said he had explained that Kit embarrassed him in front of a friend, while Kit denied the incident. The report does not date this exchange, and it does not describe an ongoing attempt to repair the relationship.
What Kieran Culkin has said
Kieran Culkin told Vogue in 2024 that he and his father do not speak and that their estrangement dates back decades. His account supports the picture of a long-running rift, but it does not establish what Kit did to contact Kieran or his siblings individually.

What the public record can—and cannot—show
The available accounts point to a prolonged estrangement and include Macaulay’s memory of a past exchange with Kit. They do not establish a sustained reconciliation effort or a family-wide pattern of contact. Nor can public reporting rule out private communication that was never disclosed.
Other reported events provide context, not proof of outreach: The Independent says Patricia Brentrup won custody of her and Kit’s children in 1997, two years after the couple separated and a custody dispute followed. It also reported that Kit told the Daily Mail in 2016, “I don’t consider him a son anymore.” That reported remark is Kit’s statement about the estrangement, not evidence that he attempted to reconnect.
