How JJ dies in the Season 4 finale
JJ discovers that Chandler Groff is his biological father. When Groff threatens Kiara, JJ gives him the Blue Crown in exchange for her safety. Groff then stabs JJ. Was JJ’s death meant to be permanent?
Yes. The creators said JJ’s death was planned as part of the series’ story, rather than a fake-out. Co-creator Josh Pate said it would set up the fifth and final season’s story of redemption and reflect the friendship JJ had come to represent. He also called the death “a hard but necessary piece of the architecture for the story.” These are the creators’ stated narrative reasons; they do not establish claims about off-screen reasons for Pankow’s departure.
Does JJ come back in Season 5?
No. Netflix’s Season 5 coverage describes the remaining Pogues processing JJ’s death, and its series-finale recap says Pankow does not make a new appearance as JJ. Who is the baby named JJ?
John B and Sarah’s baby is named JJ, but the name honors JJ Maybank; it is not the original character returning. The namesake and Kiara’s memories are part of how the finale acknowledges his absence.
