Did JD Vance Kill Pope Francis? What the Official Record Says

The Vatican’s official declaration attributes Pope Francis’s death to stroke, coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse. Two viral Vance videos were also misleading: one was satire, and another used altered audio over older footage.

No evidence in the reviewed sources supports the claim that JD Vance caused Pope Francis’s death. The Vatican’s official declaration says Francis died of a stroke, coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse on 21 April 2025, after serious prior illnesses. Vance’s meeting with Francis shortly before his death is a matter of chronology, not evidence of causation.

What caused Pope Francis’s death?

The Holy See’s official death declaration records that Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died at 7:35 a.m. on 21 April 2025 in his apartment at Domus Sanctae Marthae, Vatican City. It lists the causes as stroke, coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse.

The declaration also records a history of acute respiratory failure in the context of bilateral multimicrobial pneumonia, multiple bronchiectasis, arterial hypertension and type II diabetes. It was signed by Professor Andrea Arcangeli, Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of Vatican City State, who wrote: “I declare that the causes of death to the best of my knowledge and belief are as stated above.”

Why did the claim circulate?

Francis and Vance met shortly before the Pope died. That timing may help explain why the accusation drew attention, but a meeting followed by a death does not establish that one caused the other. The Vatican’s published medical record attributes the death to the conditions it lists; the reviewed sources provide no evidence that Vance caused it.

The Holy See Press Office reported that Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell announced Francis’s death at 9:47 a.m. on 21 April and gave the time of death as 7:35 a.m. Farrell said: “At 7.35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”

Two viral Vance videos were misleading

Fact-checks by Lead Stories identified two different kinds of misleading video connected to the rumor. They document specific examples, not every post or the full scale of the claim.

A comedian’s satire recirculated without context

A video presented as Vance’s sister asking people to stop joking about him was a satirical performance by comedian Blaire Erskine, according to Lead Stories’ fact-check. Reposts left out the satire context.

Older footage with replaced audio

A clip purporting to show Vance discussing “parodies” and “accusations” after Francis’s death used digitally replaced audio, Lead Stories found. The underlying footage came from a speech in July 2024, months before the Pope died. Its fact-check distinguishes the old video from the audio later attached to it.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The official declaration provides the Vatican’s stated cause of death. The two video checks identify a satirical performance and a clip with altered audio. None of these sources supports the accusation that Vance caused Francis’s death.

The reviewed sources also do not measure how widely the accusation spread or how many people believed it. Phrases such as “users swear” should not be read as a verified statistic about public opinion.
