Sofia Carson called playing Cassie in Purple Hearts her greatest acting challenge to date. In a TheWrap interview, she explained that the work meant developing a character over years, shaping a life and history for her, and making her feel distinct from Carson herself. Carson’s description is her personal assessment of the role, not an objective ranking of her performances.
Why did Sofia Carson find Cassie so challenging to play?
“Cassie was my greatest challenge as an actor to date, and I admire her so much,” Carson told TheWrap. She said she had the honor of living with Cassie and helping create her for four years before physically becoming her.
That distinction between Carson and Cassie was a central part of the work. Carson described trying to move beyond her own everyday mannerisms—including how she walked, spoke, and carried herself—to find choices that belonged to the character. She also worked toward speech that felt true to Cassie rather than simply sounding like Carson.
In a separate interview with Audacy, Carson said, “Cassie from Purple Hearts has definitely been my greatest challenge as an actor.” She described the project as five years in the making. TheWrap’s four-year account and Audacy’s five-year description are different personal timeline statements from separate interviews, not a single verified production chronology.

How did Carson prepare to play Cassie?
Carson said she researched parts of Cassie’s life that she believed would shape the character: the immigrant experience in San Diego, Type 1 diabetes, military culture, and Cassie’s worldview. She also described writing a journal from Cassie’s perspective and inventing memories for her, starting with her earliest memory. People’s interview coverage, republished by Yahoo, also discusses this character journal and the memories Carson created.
These were Carson’s own preparation choices for this role. The interviews do not establish them as a universal acting method, nor do they suggest that Cassie’s fictional experience represents everyone with Type 1 diabetes, immigrants in San Diego, or military families.

What did Carson contribute beyond acting?
Carson’s work on the film also included executive producing and writing its soundtrack, according to Audacy. She told TheWrap that Netflix trusted her to choose a writing partner. She sent the script to Justin Tranter, who responded to the story and to Cassie.
Carson described songwriting for Cassie as a different imaginative task from writing as herself: rather than drawing on her own heart to express her own truths, she said she had to enter Cassie’s emotional perspective to help tell the character’s story through music. The role therefore brought together performance, producing, and songwriting, with each asking her to serve the same fictional character in a different way.

What is Purple Hearts about, and what inspired its premise?
The film’s fictional story centers on Cassie, an aspiring singer-songwriter with Type 1 diabetes, and Luke, a Marine. They enter a marriage of convenience for their own reasons. Carson told Audacy that the premise was inspired by stories of military contract marriages involving people desperate for money or health insurance, and that the filmmakers wanted to treat the subject honestly.
That is a distinction between inspiration and plot: Cassie and Luke are fictional characters, while Carson described real stories as a source of inspiration. The arrangement in the film is not legal, military, or benefits guidance.
