How did audiences respond?
The Associated Press reported that 70mm IMAX screenings sold out quickly, in some cases within minutes, and that theaters added sessions after turnout exceeded expectations. AP reported that the film earned $4.5 million from 166 screens in the United States and Canada during the reported weekend. Why did Christopher Nolan want the film back on the big screen?
As AP reported, Nolan saw an opportunity for a proper North American anniversary re-release after speaking with IMAX and Paramount. He said some people had watched the film at home without experiencing it in a theater. Nolan described the appeal as “a communal, big screen theatrical experience” that audiences still seek, adding that “that theatrical experience that we all know and love is so powerful and so exciting.” IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said, “We saw this coming from the beginning.”

What made the theatrical presentation distinctive?
Interstellar was originally released in 70mm IMAX film, 70mm film, and 35mm film presentations. Paramount’s 2014 announcement said more than an hour of the movie was shot with IMAX cameras. That large-format filmmaking helps explain the appeal of seeing it on a large screen, but it does not mean every IMAX auditorium uses 70mm film.
