Is Luc Besson’s Dracula (2025) a Must-See Fantasy Sleeper?

Luc Besson’s Dracula is a romance-forward fantasy-horror starring Caleb Landry Jones and Christoph Waltz. Here’s who it suits, what critics say, and how release details vary by market.

Yes—if you want a Dracula story driven by doomed romance, striking visuals, and an unusual take on the vampire myth rather than nonstop scares. Luc Besson’s Dracula, also released as Dracula: A Love Tale, stars Christoph Waltz as the priest hunting Dracula. Its lavish, emotionally heightened approach is compelling for some viewers and uneven for others, so “must-see sleeper” is best understood as a recommendation, not a critical consensus.

What is Besson’s Dracula about?

Based on Bram Stoker’s novel, the film begins with a 15th-century prince who loses his wife, renounces God, and becomes Dracula. Centuries later, he searches for a woman who resembles his lost love while a priest pursues him. The result is a romantic fantasy-horror retelling that puts grief and longing near the center of the familiar vampire story. SND lists both French and English versions and a runtime of 129 minutes. SND Films and Bioscop identify Stoker’s work as the source.

Besson described his approach as “At its core, it’s a love story — Dracula seen in a different light, as a man searching for his lost love over 400 years,” in a statement reported by TheWrap on September 2, 2025. That emphasis distinguishes this version from a scare-first adaptation.

Is Christoph Waltz in the new Dracula movie?

Yes. Waltz plays the priest who hunts Dracula, providing a human counterforce to Caleb Landry Jones’s Vlad/Dracula. Zoë Bleu plays Elisabeta and Mina; Matilda de Angelis and Guillaume de Tonquédec also appear in the cast. The Czech distributor Bioscop credits Danny Elfman as composer. SND Films and Bioscop list the cast and credits, while The Guardian’s review describes Waltz’s pursuit role.

What makes it worth watching—and what may not work?

The case for watching

  • Jones’s performance, the film’s visual flamboyance, and Elfman’s lush score are among the elements praised in the Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus.
  • The romance-and-grief angle gives the familiar Dracula premise a clear point of view: this is a story about a monster shaped by loss, not simply a sequence of vampire attacks.
  • Waltz’s priest creates a pursuit narrative alongside Dracula’s search for his lost love, giving the film a second dramatic line.

Reasons to approach it as an acquired taste

  • The Rotten Tomatoes consensus says inconsistent tone keeps the film from genre-defining greatness, and its reviews include negative as well as positive responses.
  • The Associated Press called it fairly watchable and rated it 2.5 out of 4 stars. The AP review is a useful middle-ground signal rather than an endorsement of a universal hit.
  • Peter Bradshaw’s Guardian review calls it ambitious and notes its panache as well as its bizarre touches. Viewers seeking consistent suspense may find the film’s shifts in tone distracting.

The strongest reason to call it a sleeper is its distinctive blend of romance, fantasy, and visual excess—not evidence that critics or audiences have reached a consensus. The available reviews support a divisive recommendation, not a formal “sleeper hit” designation.

How does it compare with other Dracula adaptations?

There is no single measure that makes one adaptation definitive. For this film, the most useful comparison is whether you want horror or romance to lead, how closely a version interprets Stoker’s novel, and whether its main attraction is performance, production design, or scares. Besson’s film puts lost love and visual spectacle prominently forward; someone looking primarily for sustained dread may prefer a different balance.

Release dates, rating, and viewing availability

The title and dates vary by market. SND lists the French theatrical release as July 30, 2025, under Dracula. The Numbers lists a U.S. wide release on February 6, 2026, and a video release date of March 10, 2026, under Dracula: A Love Tale. These are market-specific release windows, not one worldwide premiere. The Numbers’ listing records a $34,230,689 worldwide box-office total, a database figure accessed in 2026 that may be revised; gross revenue is not profit.

The runtime is 129 minutes. In the United States, The Numbers and the AP list an R rating for violence, some gore, and sexuality. SND’s under-12 prohibition applies to France; Bioscop’s under-12 notice applies to its Czech release. Use the classification for your territory rather than treating any one rating as global. SND Films, The Numbers, and Bioscop provide the respective listings.

Streaming services and catalog availability depend on country and date. Rotten Tomatoes surfaces a viewing option, but that listing does not establish comprehensive or current availability across services. Check local listings before choosing where to watch. The Numbers’ video-release entry gives a date but does not, by itself, confirm a DVD or Blu-ray format.

Should you read the book first?

No preparation is required to follow the film. Reading Stoker’s Dracula is an optional companion if you want to compare the novel’s source material with Besson’s romantic reimagining; the distributors identify the film as based on the book. TheWrap also discusses the source novel and Besson’s approach.
