Green Day played the Super Bowl LX opening ceremony at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The NFL described the ceremony as a celebration of six decades of Super Bowl history and an occasion to honor past MVPs. Bad Bunny headlined the separate halftime show, as the NFL’s Super Bowl entertainment page confirms. The event roles matter: Green Day and Bad Bunny were not competing for the same performance slot.

NFL senior director of event and game presentation Tim Tubito described Green Day as a hometown band and said the ceremony would celebrate Super Bowl history and honor NFL legends. Billie Joe Armstrong said the band was “super hyped” to open Super Bowl 60 in its backyard and looked forward to welcoming the MVPs and getting loud. The announcement was reported by The Associated Press.
What Green Day played—and what CNN says was omitted
CNN reported that the four-song set included “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” “Holiday,” “American Idiot,” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” In its account, the band skipped the bridge in “Holiday” and omitted the second verse of “American Idiot.” Those are the specific edits behind descriptions of the performance as steering clear of politics; the report establishes what was absent, not why.

How the Sunday set differed from Friday’s performance
CNN contrasted the broadcast ceremony with Green Day’s Friday Super Bowl-week performance at a Spotify and FanDuel event. CNN reported that Armstrong urged ICE agents to quit their jobs there and that the band performed the sections missing from Sunday’s televised versions of “Holiday” and “American Idiot.” The comparison documents differences between two performances; by itself, it does not show that the band changed its political views.
Why the sections were omitted is not confirmed
The reports do not provide an explanation from Green Day or the NFL for the omissions. They do not establish whether the edits reflected the band’s choice, a production decision, an external restriction, or another reason. It is accurate to say CNN reported politically salient sections missing from the televised set; it is not established that Green Day deliberately censored itself or was told to do so. What the performance can—and cannot—tell viewers
The strongest supported conclusion is limited: Green Day’s Super Bowl LX opening ceremony included four songs, and CNN noted omissions in two of them. The contrast with Friday’s event makes the Sunday edits notable, but neither the setlist nor the contrast resolves the reason behind them. The ceremony was an anniversary tribute with a distinct role in the event, while the halftime show was headlined separately by Bad Bunny.
