No. Elon Musk did not kick Stephen King off X over the alleged “Trump’s new first lady” remark. King denied both parts of the viral claim on November 13, 2024, while his account was active. He announced the next day that he was leaving the platform for a separate reason: he found its atmosphere “too toxic.”
Where did the ban rumor come from?
The claim said King had been permanently banned after calling Musk “Trump’s new first lady.” FactCheck.org traced it to a satirical Esspots article published in July 2024 that later circulated on social media as if it were a factual report. PolitiFact also identified the ban story as satire.
King addressed both claims himself in a November 13 post on X, reproduced by FactCheck.org: “I see there’s a rumor going around that I called the Musk-man Trump’s new first lady. I didn’t, but only because I didn’t think of it. There’s also a rumor going around that Muskie kicked me off Twitter. Yet here I am.” His account was active when he posted.
Why did King leave X?
On November 14, 2024, a day after denying the ban rumor, King announced that he was leaving X. As The Guardian reported, he wrote: “I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic.” He directed followers to Threads.

That was a separate decision, not evidence that Musk had banned him. The chronology is clear: King denied the rumor on November 13, then announced his departure on November 14.
What the fact-checks found
- FactCheck.org, in a report published November 13 and updated November 15, 2024, said the ban claim was false and traced it to satire.
- PolitiFact, reporting November 8, 2024, likewise characterized the claim that King had been banned as satire.
These reports establish what happened in November 2024. They do not establish whether King is active on X now.
