Who shot Drew on General Hospital?
Willow Cain (formerly Willow Tait), Drew’s wife, shot him. The January 8, 2026 episode used flashbacks to show Willow taking a gun from a safe and shooting Drew twice in the back. TV Insider’s interview with Katelyn MacMullen and Soap Opera Digest’s recap both reported the reveal.

How Trina and Kai recognized Willow
A matching ringtone connected the clues. Trina and Kai had heard a phone at Drew’s house; later, when Willow’s phone rang with the same tune, they recognized it. Courtroom flashbacks then confirmed what the ringtone suggested.
Why did Willow shoot Drew?
The writers framed the shooting as the culmination of Willow’s worsening relationship with Drew and the choices she made while trying to regain custody of her children. Head writer Elizabeth Korte said Willow came to see Drew, rather than Michael, as the obstacle between her and the children. Chris Van Etten said Willow seemed to accept Drew’s support for her custody case while beginning to play a long game. These are the writers’ explanations of the character’s motivation. MacMullen described Willow as desperate and isolated. In her interpretation, Willow believed Drew was isolating her and keeping her powerless for his own needs. “From my perspective, she felt like she had no choice,” MacMullen said. That is the actor’s perspective on Willow, rather than an objective explanation beyond the fiction. TV Insider’s January 8, 2026 interview includes her comments.
Where did the hired-shooter theory come from?
Before the reveal, viewers considered several suspects and motives, including the possibility that Drew had arranged the shooting himself. The writers said Willow was one of several plausible suspects and that the mystery was designed to give viewers clues they could weigh. Van Etten described the approach this way: “The only way that a good mystery works is if you give the audience all the information and allow them to draw conclusions, over the course of the time.” Soap Opera Digest’s January 2026 interview covers the writers’ approach and the story’s next phase.

Soap Opera Digest’s suspect poll included 13 suspects, with 31% of votes going to Willow. That publication poll shows she was a prominent guess before the reveal; it is not representative audience research, and it does not support the claim that Drew hired the shooter. The poll figures were reported by Soap Opera Digest in 2026.
What changed after the reveal?
The shooter’s identity resolved one mystery but opened another set of choices. In January 2026, the writers said Trina and Kai would have to decide whom to tell while confronting their own exposure: they had been in the house that night. Van Etten called the reveal “the end of chapter one or chapter two, depending on how you’re constructing it,” adding, “There is so much left to unfold.” Those comments described the writers’ plans at the time, not later plot developments.
