No: ABC said Constance Wu’s 2019 renewal-tweet backlash did not cause Fresh Off the Boat to end. The network announced in November 2019 that the sitcom would conclude after six seasons; ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke later described the ending as a joint decision with 20th Century Fox and the creators, who felt the characters’ story had reached a natural conclusion.
Why the cancellation became linked to Constance Wu’s tweets
Fresh Off the Boat premiered on ABC in 2015, following a Taiwanese American family relocating from Washington, D.C., to Orlando. ABC7 described it as the first broadcast sitcom centered on an Asian American family since All-American Girl (ABC7, November 8, 2019).

In May 2019, ABC renewed the show for a sixth season. Wu’s social-media response appeared frustrated: she wrote that she was “literally crying” and replied negatively to a fan congratulating her. That reaction prompted public backlash and made the renewal announcement a controversy in its own right.
Wu clarified on May 11 that the pickup created a scheduling conflict with another project she cared about. She said she still loved and enjoyed Fresh Off the Boat, and described the two feelings as compatible: “People can hold conflicting feelings in their hearts: I can both love the show/cast/crew but at the same time be disappointed that I lost that other unrelated job” (TVLine). Her explanation was not that she hated the series; it was that the renewal meant losing another opportunity.

What ABC said about ending the series
ABC announced on November 8, 2019, that the sitcom would finish after six seasons. At the time, the network scheduled the finale as an hour-long event for February 21, 2020 (ABC7).
At a Television Critics Association winter press event on January 8, 2020, ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said the decision was made jointly by ABC, 20th Century Fox and the creators. Her explanation was that the characters had reached a natural endpoint, with Eddie graduating and moving out. Burke explicitly rejected the idea that Wu’s tweets had killed the show. She also praised Wu’s work that season: “Constance actually was incredible this season on the show, and we were thrilled to have her there” (TVLine).
ABC7 reproduced Burke’s statement accompanying the cancellation announcement: “We couldn’t be prouder of this game-changing show and the impact it has had on our cultural landscape” (ABC7). Taken together, the public explanation from the network points to a planned story conclusion, not punishment for Wu’s online reaction.
What Wu said later about her reaction
In 2022, Wu gave additional personal context in an interview with ABC News. She alleged that an unnamed producer had sexually harassed and intimidated her on set, and said those experiences contributed to her anger about the renewal and her difficulty moving on. ABC News reported that ABC had no comment. These are Wu’s allegations and account, not independently adjudicated findings (ABC News, October 2022).

This later account helps explain why the renewal could have carried personal weight beyond the scheduling conflict she discussed publicly in 2019. It does not change the cancellation rationale Burke gave: she said the decision was joint and story-driven, and that the tweets were not the cause. Wu’s memoir, Making a Scene, released October 4, 2022, includes her account of the allegations and backlash, as ABC News reported.

The show had cultural and creative debates before its final season. Eddie Huang, whose memoir inspired the sitcom, criticized aspects of how the parents were portrayed and objected to the original working title, Far East Orlando, pushing for a title change. TIME also quoted executive producer Nahnatchka Khan explaining why the pilot included a racist slur (TIME, 2015).
Those debates are part of the show’s history and the conversation around its representation of Asian American life. The cited reporting does not connect them to ABC’s decision to end the series, so they should not be treated as causes of the cancellation.
