The major July 2026 reports were not about a newly leaked trailer: they described an unauthorized copy of the full film The Odyssey circulating on X after its theatrical opening. Universal had already released an official online trailer on May 7. The sources reviewed do not establish whether a separate trailer leaked at another time.
What leaked—and what did not
Variety and The Guardian reported on July 27, 2026, that a post on X drew attention to a copy of the full feature film. The post’s wording was: “Someone uploaded ‘The Odyssey’ full movie on X. Can you believe it?” The reports concern the film itself, not the official trailer released earlier.

Variety said the post amplifying the copy had more than 2.1 million views within two and a half hours on July 25. The Guardian reported that the post flagging the copy had more than three million views before the hosting account was suspended. These are separate outlets’ figures, with different descriptions and measurement windows; they should not be treated as one combined count. Variety reported that the post was replaced by a takedown notice and the account was suspended.
The Guardian said it was not known how the copy had been obtained. The reports do not establish whether it came from a cinema recording, a screener, or another source.

What Universal said about the X post
In a statement to Variety and The Guardian, Universal said: “We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.”
The reviewed sources do not establish whether any unauthorized copy remains available as of October 8, 2026. This article does not link to or direct readers to unauthorized copies.

Where to find the official trailer and film information
The official trailer
NBCUniversal published “The Odyssey | Official New Trailer” on May 7, 2026. Its newsroom describes the film as based on Homer’s epic and says it was shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
Theatrical release information
Universal Pictures Canada’s film page gives a July 17, 2026 theatrical opening date and labels the film “NOW PLAYING.” That is a Canada-market page, not a source for showtimes in other locations; check local theater listings for current availability.
What the film is
NBCUniversal describes The Odyssey as a mythic action epic filmed across international locations and based on Homer’s foundational saga. The official cast listing includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Zendaya. NBCUniversal identifies Damon as Odysseus, Hathaway as Penelope, and Holland as Telemachus. Universal Pictures Canada lists Christopher Nolan as writer and director, and Emma Thomas and Nolan as producers.
At CinemaCon, Nolan described the source material as: “It’s not a story, it’s the story,” according to the Associated Press’s April 16, 2026 report. That remark was about the epic’s significance, not the reported leak.

What the leak reports do not establish
- Who supplied or uploaded the copy, or how it was obtained.
- Whether an unauthorized copy is currently accessible.
- Current box-office totals. The Guardian’s July 27 report cited $87 million in US gross for the second weekend and $640 million in global takings after that weekend; these were figures at that time, not current totals.
- Current local showtimes outside the Canadian information on Universal’s page.
