PerthNow reported on 25 October 2022 that former Australian attorney-general Christian Porter and lawyer Karen Espiner attended the Telethon Ball together, where Espiner was seen wearing a large diamond ring. The report framed the appearance as an engagement reveal, but neither Porter nor Espiner was quoted directly confirming a proposal.
What did the Telethon Ball report say?
PerthNow’s 25 October 2022 article said Porter and Espiner attended the Perth charity event on the preceding Saturday, 22 October. It reported that Espiner wore a large diamond ring and described Porter as revealing that the couple were engaged. The account credited The West Australian for details from the ball; it was not a direct statement from either person. PerthNow’s report
The available report does not include a direct quote from Porter or Espiner about a proposal, when it happened, or the ring. Accordingly, the engagement should be described as reported by PerthNow, rather than as a first-person announcement at the event.
When did Porter and Espiner’s relationship begin?
The ball was not reported as the start of their relationship. PerthNow said they had been together since 2021. In June 2021, LawFuel reported that a spokesman had confirmed they were in the early stages of a relationship. The spokesman’s statement said: “The Minister and Ms Espiner have confirmed they are in the early stages of a relationship. Who is Karen Espiner?
PerthNow identified Espiner as a partner at Younes + Espiner Lawyers and described her as a Sydney lawyer. The same report said Porter had returned to legal practice in Perth after stepping away from politics. Those professional details are attributed to the 2022 article, not presented here as independently verified current positions.
