Yes. Frankie’s Bar Freo opened in early October 2024 in the basement beneath Fremantle’s Norfolk Hotel—the space locals knew as the Aardvark. The former live-music venue has returned in a different format: Frankie’s was introduced as a Friday-night bar led by DJs and dancing, with the possibility of occasional bands.
What happened to the Aardvark?
The Aardvark closed in October 2022 after more than two decades as a live-music home, according to PerthNow’s October 24, 2024 report. The report cited COVID-related capacity restrictions and rising costs. Acts it says played there included Spacey Jane, Tame Impala and the Presets.

Frankie’s occupies the former Aardvark basement beneath the Norfolk Hotel. At its 2024 launch, business development manager Meredith Fonti described it as “a sneaky underground bar.” She said: “We will always have a DJ and we are open to having bands down there, but it’s not primarily a live music space.” That makes the distinction from the Aardvark’s reported identity clear: the new concept was DJ-led, rather than primarily a live-music venue.

Frankie’s was open to hosting bands at launch, but the stated focus was DJs rather than regular live-music programming. PerthNow’s 2024 report described an opening-era menu of jaffles, sandwiches, pies and quesadillas; that historical menu should not be assumed to be current.

The Norfolk Hotel lists the basement as a function and event space for up to 165 guests outside its Friday-bar use. For private functions or event-specific details, contact the hotel directly.
