Short answer: Amazon removed the Prime Video-only membership from prominent signup pages in the United States and United Kingdom in April 2024, but that did not initially mean the plan had ended. Amazon said the US option was still available through a less visible Prime Video signup route, and the original reports were updated. The US position later hardened: an Amazon staff response on July 3, 2025 said the $8.99 standalone plan was “no longer available at the moment.” In the UK, current Amazon pages do not list the option, while older Amazon material still describes it. The most accurate description is a quiet, market-specific removal or restriction—not a clearly announced simultaneous cancellation in both countries.
What changed in April 2024?
The affected product was the Prime Video-only membership: access to Amazon’s streaming library without delivery, Prime Reading, Amazon Photos, Prime Gaming and other full-Prime benefits. It was not the Prime Video app, Prime Video content or Prime Video add-on channels.
Reports published around April 18, 2024 said Amazon had removed the standalone choice from its main US and UK Prime signup pages. At the time, the historical prices were $8.99 per month in the US and £5.99 per month in the UK. Those figures describe the 2024 episode and should not be treated as current prices.
Amazon disputed the idea that the US plan had been cancelled. The option could still be reached through the Prime Video signup flow, although it was hidden behind additional navigation. The distinction mattered: removing a plan from a prominent page makes new signup harder, but is not the same as ending the product.

The chronology was subsequently clarified in coverage from Cord Busters, Yahoo/Engadget and the Android Headlines article published April 22, 2024, which was updated after Amazon’s response.
US status: later evidence points to withdrawal
The clearest later US evidence is an Amazon staff reply dated July 3, 2025. Answering a customer asking about the $8.99 option, the representative wrote: “Unfortunately this plan is no longer available at the moment.”
That is stronger evidence than the April 2024 page change, but it was a staff response in the Amazon forum rather than a formal corporate discontinuation announcement. It also does not establish that every historical standalone subscriber was automatically cancelled.

UK status: no prominent offer, inconsistent documentation
Amazon’s current UK Prime page promotes full Prime at £8.99 per month or £95 per year. Its current fee help page lists full Prime, Prime Student, young-adult pricing and delivery information, but does not list a Prime Video-only membership:
However, an older Amazon UK editorial page still says that customers can subscribe to Prime Video without full Prime benefits: Amazon’s Prime Video explainer. That page may be stale. Independent reporting and user experiences have also conflicted over whether the option was removed or merely concealed.
Therefore, the defensible UK conclusion is that standalone Prime Video is no longer prominently offered and could not be confirmed as generally available. There is no evidence here of a clear, public Amazon announcement formally cancelling it for every UK account.

What existing subscribers should know before cancelling
Contemporary 2024 reporting indicated that existing standalone customers could continue paying for and using the plan, while warning that cancelling or switching might make it impossible to return to the legacy membership. That was not a guarantee of permanent grandfathered access, and Amazon’s current public pages do not promise reinstatement.

If you still see a standalone plan on your account:
- Open Prime Video and go to Account & Settings → Your Account → End Subscription only if you are certain you want to cancel. Amazon’s cancellation instructions are at Prime Video Help.
- Before changing anything, screenshot the plan name, price, renewal date and cancellation terms.
- Do not cancel simply to test whether the option can be restored. Support may not be able to recover it after cancellation, a move to full Prime, a country change or a change in billing route.
- If you have full Prime instead, manage it separately through Prime Membership → Edit on Amazon.
- Subscriptions created through a mobile provider or another third party generally must be cancelled with that billing provider.
Prime Video channels and other add-ons can have separate billing and cancellation rules.

What full Prime costs and includes in the UK
For UK customers, full Prime currently costs £8.99 monthly or £95 annually, subject to Amazon’s displayed price at signup. Eligible students and 18–24-year-olds have discounted plans listed as £4.49 per month or £47.49 per year. Full Prime combines Prime Video with delivery benefits, Prime Reading, Amazon Photos, Prime Gaming and other features. See Amazon’s UK benefits and price information.
The bundle is not automatically good value for a video-only viewer. Someone who rarely shops at Amazon may pay for benefits they do not use, even if full Prime is convenient for a household that orders frequently.
Advertising and the US Prime Video Ultra upgrade
Prime Video’s standard viewing experience includes advertising in markets where Amazon has introduced it, with ad-free access sold separately. In the United States, Amazon announced on March 13, 2026 that its previous Ad Free tier had become Prime Video Ultra, priced at $4.99 per month. The announcement describes expanded features including more concurrent streams, more downloads and exclusive 4K/UHD access: Amazon’s Ultra announcement.

The $4.99 price is US-specific and is an add-on to Prime-related access. It should not be assumed to apply in the UK or to replace a base membership.
Which option fits your situation?

Why the headline became misleading
The original “discontinued in the UK and US” wording treated disappearance from a main signup page as proof of product termination. It also merged two different evidence trails: a later direct US staff statement and a much less certain UK documentation gap. Amazon’s preference for displaying full Prime may suggest a commercial incentive to steer video viewers toward the bundle, but Amazon has not publicly established that as the reason.
As of August 18, 2026, the careful summary is: Amazon quietly removed or restricted standalone Prime Video signup in both markets; the US plan was later described by Amazon staff as unavailable, while UK availability remains unconfirmed amid contradictory Amazon pages.
