Dick Van Dyke’s four children followed very different paths. Christian “Chris” Van Dyke worked in law and business, Barry Van Dyke built the most visible acting career, and Stacy and Carrie Beth made occasional television appearances before largely avoiding public attention.
All four were born during Dick Van Dyke’s marriage to Margie Willett, who he married in 1948. The couple later separated and divorced in 1984. Here is what is reliably known about their family, careers, and connection to Van Dyke’s screen work.
Who are Dick Van Dyke’s four children?
| Child | Known for | Birth information |
|---|---|---|
| Christian “Chris” Van Dyke | Law and corporate work | Oldest child and son |
| Barry Van Dyke | Acting, including Diagnosis: Murder | Born July 1951 |
| Stacy Van Dyke | Television appearances | Born 1955 |
| Carrie Beth Van Dyke | Occasional television work | Born October 1961 |
The children are generally listed in that order: Christian, Barry, Stacy, and Carrie Beth. They are sometimes described as a family of actors, but that is misleading. Barry became a full-time professional actor, while Christian pursued law and business. Stacy and Carrie Beth had limited screen credits and have mostly remained private.
Christian “Chris” Van Dyke
Christian Van Dyke is Dick Van Dyke’s oldest child and oldest son. He briefly appeared on The Dick Van Dyke Show, but entertainment was not his long-term profession. He studied law at Arizona State University and built a career in Oregon’s legal system.

His public-service roles included deputy district attorney and assistant attorney general. An Oregon state appointment record shows that he became Marion County district attorney in September 1980 and resigned from the position in 1984. Later family reporting connected him with corporate work involving companies including Nike and Patagonia.
Christian’s family experienced a devastating loss when his daughter, Jessica Lee, died in 1987 at age 13 from complications associated with Reye’s syndrome. After her death, Dick Van Dyke took part in public-service efforts warning parents about the risks associated with giving aspirin to children. That part of the family story is important because it shows Van Dyke’s public advocacy extending beyond entertainment.
Barry Van Dyke
Barry Van Dyke became the best-known of Dick Van Dyke’s children as a professional performer. His early television exposure included an appearance on The Dick Van Dyke Show as a child. He later worked behind the scenes on The New Dick Van Dyke Show before establishing himself as an actor.
Among Barry’s notable roles was Lieutenant Dillon on Galactica 1980. His most recognizable part came on Diagnosis: Murder, where he played Lieutenant Steve Sloan, the son of Dick Van Dyke’s character, physician Dr. Mark Sloan. The casting gave the two actors an unusually direct on-screen family relationship and made Barry a familiar face to television viewers.

Father and son also worked together on The Van Dyke Show and the Murder 101 television films. Their collaborations were not simply family cameos: Barry had an established television career of his own, while the productions gave audiences another opportunity to see the Van Dykes working together.
Barry married Mary Carey in 1974. They have four children: Carey, Shane, Wes, and Taryn.
Stacy Van Dyke
Stacy Van Dyke is Dick Van Dyke’s younger daughter. Her screen work included appearances associated with The New Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis: Murder, but she did not develop the same sustained public acting career as her brother Barry.
One of her better-documented roles was in the Diagnosis: Murder episode “Murder in the Family.” She played Carol Sloan Hilton, the estranged daughter of Dick Van Dyke’s character, Dr. Mark Sloan. The role created another fictional family connection between the father and daughter, although Stacy’s appearances were limited.

Us Weekly reports that Stacy married Mike Breen in 1979. Beyond those basic details, reliable recent information about her career and personal life is limited. Claims about her current work, residence, or online activity should not be treated as established facts without stronger sourcing. Her name is commonly written “Stacy,” although some older material uses “Stacey.”
Carrie Beth Van Dyke
Carrie Beth Van Dyke is the youngest of Dick Van Dyke and Margie Willett’s four children. She was born in October 1961 and made a small number of television appearances, including appearances connected with The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Unlike Barry, Carrie Beth did not establish a long-running public acting career. She has generally lived outside the entertainment spotlight. She married Kevin McNally in 1983, and they have two children.
Because Carrie Beth has maintained a private life, detailed claims about her present-day occupation or activities are difficult to verify. The available reporting supports the broad outline of her family and limited television involvement, not a more elaborate celebrity biography.

How the children connected to Dick Van Dyke’s television career
The family’s strongest professional connection was through television. Christian appeared briefly but went into law. Barry became a recurring collaborator and played Dick’s character’s son on Diagnosis: Murder. Stacy also appeared in that series as another member of the fictional Sloan family, while Carrie Beth had only a few documented appearances.
That history explains why the four children are sometimes grouped together as performers. A more accurate description is that they grew up around a major television star and had differing levels of involvement in his shows. Only Barry made acting his central professional path.

Public biographies and family reporting establish the children’s names, birth order, several career details, marriages, and television connections. They do not provide a complete account of the private lives of Stacy and Carrie Beth, and current information about all four should be approached carefully.
In particular, it is best not to repeat unsupported birth dates, current occupations, residences, or social-media claims. Christian is also identified as Chris in some records, and Stacy may appear as Stacey in older sources, but these variations refer to the same family members.
