But the move comes after Dexter discovers that Mia kills without the moral code he thought they shared—and it leaves him manipulating the case as well as trying to repair his relationship with his son.
Harrison is close to confessing
Dexter approaches Harrison as his son remains weighed down by killing Ryan Foster. Harrison believed Foster deserved punishment, but that has not erased his guilt. He is also still a suspect, and Foster’s watch remains a tangible reminder of what happened.
The reunion is tense. Harrison is angry and uneasy about Dexter’s return, while Dexter sees both the legal danger surrounding his son and the emotional damage between them. His effort to protect Harrison begins as an attempt to keep him from confessing, but it soon becomes a plan to redirect the investigation.
Mia is not the partner Dexter imagined
Dexter grows closer to Mia and considers telling her who he really is. When she suggests they work together on a kill, he has reason to think they might share a way of choosing victims. Then Mia reveals that she does not limit her targets according to a moral code.

That changes Dexter’s view of her. Mia, known as Lady Vengeance, is not simply a potential partner whose methods need fine-tuning; her willingness to kill without the restriction Dexter assumed she followed makes her a threat. Dexter cannot safely kill her without drawing attention to himself, so he looks for another way to stop her.
How Dexter turns the Foster case toward Mia
When Mia is about to kill another victim, Dexter intervenes by having her arrested. He then arranges for her to be blamed for Ryan Foster’s murder, shifting suspicion away from Harrison.
Rank #2
The move gives Harrison protection, but it is not an uncomplicated rescue. Dexter exposes Mia to prosecution and manipulates the investigation to do it. His attempt to keep his son out of danger depends on using someone else as the answer to a crime Dexter knows Harrison committed.

The episode’s final conversation offers a different kind of intervention. Dexter tells Harrison he will stop trying to shape him into his own image. Rather than insist that his son follow Dexter’s path, he begins to accept that Harrison must be allowed to make his own choices.
Rank #3
That promise does not undo the Foster killing or the deception surrounding the investigation. It does, however, mark a shift in their relationship: Dexter’s focus turns from molding Harrison to trying to reconnect with him.
