Death by Lightning is a dramatization of real events, not a documentary. Its central timeline and the assassination of President James A. Garfield are well documented, but some memorable dialogue is adapted from historical records, reassigned to different speakers, or staged more dramatically than the evidence establishes.
Is Death by Lightning based on a true story?
Yes. Netflix describes its four-episode 2025 limited drama, created by Mike Makowsky, as based on Candice Millard’s 2011 nonfiction book Destiny of the Republic. That makes the series a historical drama, not a documentary: the events have a documented historical basis, while private conversations and their precise staging may be reconstructed. Netflix’s series page identifies the program and episodes.

For readers who want the narrative history behind the adaptation, Millard’s Destiny of the Republic is the book that inspired the series. Penguin Random House’s book page identifies the title and its publication details.
What happened to James A. Garfield?
The National Park Service establishes the central chronology: Charles Guiteau shot President Garfield at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station on July 2, 1881. Garfield died on September 19, after surviving for eighty days; Guiteau was executed on June 30, 1882. Garfield had been president for about four months when he was shot. The NPS account of Garfield’s medical care and its account of Guiteau document the timeline.

- Five years after the release of Enter the Dragon and the death of its star Bruce Lee, director Robert Clouse was recruited by Golden Harvest to complete Lee's last, unfinished masterwork, only a third of which was filmed before he died: Game of Death. The result is an exciting rollercoaster ride that blends Lee's martial arts mastery with Clouse's eye for nail-biting suspense.
How does the series handle the historical dialogue?
The clearest fact-versus-fiction distinction is not whether certain sentiments existed, but who said them, to whom, and in what setting. The Library of Congress compared two late-series exchanges with the historical record. It finds that the records support the underlying words or encounter, but not the exact scene as presented onscreen. The Library of Congress’s comparison is the key source for these dialogue details.
Did Lucretia Garfield say the “great emergencies” line to Chester Arthur?
Not in the form shown. Lucretia Garfield and Vice President Chester Arthur did meet at the White House after Garfield was wounded, but the meeting was less dramatic than the series depicts. The line about “great emergencies” and “generous traits” comes from a letter Julia I. Sand wrote to Arthur on August 27, 1881: “Great emergencies awaken generous traits which have lain dormant half a life.” Netflix adapts that language into Lucretia’s dialogue, so the sentiment has a historical source but its speaker and delivery are changed.

Who answered Garfield’s question about his place in history?
Almon Rockwell’s record, dated September 17, 1881, says Garfield asked, “will my name have any place in human history?” Rockwell answered, “Yes, a grand one,” then added, “but a grander place in human hearts.” The series gives the response to Lucretia instead. The Library of Congress says the record does not establish whether Lucretia was present for Rockwell’s exchange. Garfield died two days later.
Are the shooting and medical treatment accurate?
The shooting and the uncertainty around Garfield’s treatment are documented. Because X-rays had not yet been invented, doctors probed the wound with their fingers while trying to locate the bullet; after three weeks, they still had no firm conclusion, according to the NPS. Alexander Graham Bell also tried to locate the bullet with an induction-balance machine, adapting technology developed by Simon Newcomb. The NPS describes the attempt, not a successful discovery of the bullet.

The NPS says Garfield suffered from poor medical care by physicians who were not trained in Listerian antiseptic methods. Guiteau later claimed at trial, “I did not kill the President. The doctors did that.” That is Guiteau’s courtroom argument, not an uncontested medical or legal conclusion. The historical distinction is between Guiteau’s shooting, the treatment Garfield received afterward, and later interpretations of how those events contributed to his death.
What is known about Guiteau’s motive?
The NPS describes Guiteau as a mentally unstable office-seeker who believed his Republican campaign work entitled him to a patronage appointment. He had delivered a few speeches to small New York crowds, adapted a speech originally written for Ulysses S. Grant by substituting Garfield’s name, and sought a diplomatic post in Paris or Vienna. The NPS places his fixation in the context of Garfield’s public conflict with Senator Roscoe Conkling over patronage.
Those documented actions and beliefs provide context, but they do not verify every private conversation or psychological explanation in the drama. Unless a particular scene is supported by a contemporary record, treat its dialogue and exact sequence as dramatization rather than a verbatim account.

Netflix’s Tudum coverage traces the title to a quotation attributed to Garfield: “Assassination can be no more guarded against than death by lightning. And it is best not to worry too much about either one.” The line supplies the title’s historical reference; it does not mean the series’ scenes are documentary transcripts. Netflix Tudum’s coverage gives the title context.
