Spoilers for “Dexter: Resurrection” Season 1, Episode 3, “Backseat Driver.” Dexter’s attempt to blend in as a rideshare driver leads him to Ronald “Red” Schmidt, a killer who targets drivers—and brings Dexter back to the ritual of his kill table.
Dexter’s rideshare job puts him on Ronald Schmidt’s trail
In “Backseat Driver,” Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) takes rideshare work under the name UrCar. The job is meant to help him keep a low profile, but it also puts him in the path of Ronald “Red” Schmidt (Marc Menchaca), a man who preys on rideshare drivers and identifies himself as the “Dark Passenger.”
Dexter has a rough start behind the wheel. His neighbor Blessing Kamara helps him with the work, then welcomes him into his family’s home. That brief warmth gives Dexter a glimpse of the ordinary family life he is cut off from, even as he continues pursuing Ronald.
Harrison remains under police scrutiny
While Dexter follows his own lead, Harrison is still dealing with questions about an earlier killing and missing evidence. Detective Wallace presses him, and she and Detective Oliva confront him at the hotel. Harrison offers an explanation for his living situation, but the detectives’ questions keep the investigation hanging over him; the episode does not establish that they have proved his guilt.

Dexter watches Harrison from a distance and weighs whether to approach him. Harry urges him toward his son, keeping Dexter’s desire for connection in tension with his instinct to stay away.
Dexter captures Ronald and returns to the kill table
After identifying Ronald, Dexter follows him. Their confrontation turns dangerous when Ronald threatens him with razor wire. Dexter survives the struggle, incapacitates Ronald, and takes him to the kill table—the series’ familiar ritual, brought back into focus in this episode.
Rank #2
Ronald tells Dexter that his father drove a taxi, lost work as rideshare services grew, and later died by suicide. Dexter does not accept that history as a justification for Ronald’s attacks on drivers. “You can’t kill innocent people!” he says before killing him.
The invitation sets up Dexter’s next move
Among Ronald’s belongings, Dexter finds money and an invitation to a gathering for people who want to share their “craft.” He takes Ronald’s thumbprint to gain entry. The invitation gives Dexter a new lead beyond the rideshare killings and closes the episode on the prospect of a gathering of killers; it does not yet reveal what Dexter will find there.
