Dennis Thompson, the drummer whose hard-driving playing helped define Detroit rock band MC5, died in Taylor, Michigan, at 75. He was the group’s last surviving member at the time of his death.
What was reported about Dennis Thompson’s death?
Thompson died at a rehabilitation center while recovering from a recent heart attack, according to a May 10, 2024 report by Michigan Memorial Funeral Home, which attributed the information to his son, Chris McNulty. That account describes the circumstances surrounding his death; it does not establish a definitive medical cause.

How did Thompson shape MC5’s sound?
Thompson was MC5’s drummer, known by the nickname “Machine Gun” for his rapid, forceful style. The Michigan Memorial report says the band could not afford a microphone for his drums early on. McNulty recalled: “The amps were turned up to 10, so he had to hit the drums as hard as he could to be heard”.
That hard-hitting approach was more than a nickname or anecdote: the drums helped drive the band’s high-energy live sound. Thompson’s playing is especially vivid on Kick Out the Jams, MC5’s 1969 debut live album, recorded at Detroit’s Grande Ballroom, as described by The Guardian.

MC5’s Detroit music and politics
MC5 emerged from Detroit with a sound rooted in loud, urgent rock and a public identity tied to political protest. The band’s activism connected it with antiwar and anti-racist movements, while its confrontational energy helped point toward the punk that followed, according to The Guardian.
Kick Out the Jams remains a direct way to encounter that force in performance. MC5 followed it with the studio albums Back in the USA (1970) and High Time (1971). The band’s significance was also recognized in 2024, when MC5 received the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Musical Excellence Award at the October 19 ceremony, as reported by Axios Cleveland. That was a Musical Excellence recognition, not an upcoming induction.

When did Thompson join MC5?
The year differs across the accounts: Michigan Memorial says Thompson joined in 1966, while The Guardian says 1965. Both report that he was 17, so it is more accurate to note the discrepancy than to present one joining year as settled.

McNulty told The Guardian: “He was a true, free-spirited rock and roller up until the very last day.” Thompson’s drumming remains part of MC5’s musical legacy: a physical, propulsive force bound to the band’s Detroit roots and its era of protest.
