The credential was not an ordination: The Independent reported that he was not yet ordained, though the license could allow him to be ordained in the future.
What happened at the ceremony?

Washington was 69 at the time and turned 70 on December 28, 2024. His wife, Pauletta, attended and spoke in his honor, both outlets reported.
Did Denzel Washington become a minister or get ordained?
He received a ministerial training license, but the ceremony did not ordain him. The Independent reported that the license could allow him to be ordained in the future and explicitly noted that Washington was not yet ordained. It is therefore more precise to describe the event as his baptism and receipt of a minister’s license, rather than saying he became a pastor.

What did Washington say at the ceremony?
“It took a while, but I’m here,” Washington told the congregation, according to ABC News.
He also recounted a story about Miss Ruth Green, a woman at his mother’s beauty parlor whom he said was known for having the gift of prophecy. Washington said Green had predicted that he would “travel the world and preach to millions of people.” He connected the account to his later public life and thanked God for what he had been given. This was Washington’s account of Green’s prediction, as reported by ABC News.
