Spoilers for Arrival (2016). The scenes of Louise Banks with her daughter Hannah are not memories: they are glimpses of Louise’s future. As Louise learns the heptapods’ written language, she begins to experience time nonlinearly. Ian Donnelly will be Hannah’s father, and Louise embraces a life with them despite knowing it will include Hannah’s early death.
What does the ending of Arrival mean?
The late reveal changes how to read the film’s opening images of Louise and Hannah. They seemed to show a daughter Louise had already lost; they actually show events Louise has not yet lived. By the end, Louise understands that the heptapods’ language has changed her experience of time, giving her access to future events as well as past ones.
That knowledge includes a future with Ian, the physicist she works alongside, and their daughter Hannah. Louise accepts that future, including its happiness and its grief. The film’s premise is speculative fiction: it does not establish a real-world scientific account of language or time. Paramount’s official synopsis presents Louise as the translator trying to understand the visitors’ intent; the film’s ending reveals the personal consequences of that work. Are the scenes with Louise’s daughter flashbacks or flash-forwards?
They are flash-forwards, though the film initially edits them to resemble memories. The reveal is not that Hannah was imaginary or that Louise misremembered her childhood. Hannah is Louise and Ian’s future daughter. The structure lets viewers discover the temporal shift alongside Louise’s changing understanding of time.

Is Hannah real, and who is her father?
Hannah is real within the story, and Ian is her father. The ending shows Louise choosing a future relationship with Ian and a life that includes Hannah, even though Louise knows the child will die young. The emotional force comes from the coexistence of that foreknowledge and the love Louise will experience.
Does Louise choose her future, or is it predetermined?
Arrival deliberately leaves that question unsettled. Screenwriter Eric Heisserer said, “I think it’s still left up in the air whether the future is deterministic.” He has also described Louise’s choice as central to the ending’s emotional power. Director Denis Villeneuve places the emphasis differently. He described the film as “a woman having a new relationship with death and changing her perspective on her own life, and finding a new humility going through that process.” In his reading, Louise does not choose whether to gain the perception the heptapods’ language makes possible; the question is how she embraces joy while knowing loss lies ahead. Villeneuve also rejected the idea that he intended the story as a pro-life argument. How the film’s ending differs in emphasis from Ted Chiang’s story
Arrival is based on Ted Chiang’s short story “Story of Your Life,” collected in Stories of Your Life and Others. Both works put language and time at the center, but the film’s treatment of Louise’s agency and her future with Ian has its own dramatic emphasis. Heisserer described the choice in the film’s ending as emotionally powerful; it should not be treated as proof that the movie and story make precisely the same philosophical argument. Why the reveal depends on the way the film handles first contact
The heptapods’ language has to feel like something Louise works to understand, not a device that instantly supplies answers. In a PBS On Story discussion, Heisserer recalled that an early version moved quickly into conversation with the visitors. Villeneuve encouraged a longer, more physical approach to entering the ship and encountering them, helping make communication feel like a process. Heisserer also discussed a cut Louise-and-Hannah scene built around ordinary parent-child conflict.
