Who is Sumiyoshi in Demon Slayer?
Sumiyoshi is a member of the Kamado family from an earlier generation. He lived long before Tanjiro and was a friend of Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the swordsman associated with Sun Breathing. Their friendship is important to the Kamado family’s history, but it does not make Yoriichi Tanjiro’s ancestor.

Why does Sumiyoshi look like Tanjiro?
The story frames the resemblance as a family resemblance between an ancestor and a descendant. Sumiyoshi is described as having facial features, eyes, and hair similar to Tanjiro’s, while appearing older and without Tanjiro’s scar. How is Sumiyoshi connected to Yoriichi and Hinokami Kagura?
Sumiyoshi watched Yoriichi perform Sun Breathing and memorized its movements. He preserved what he had seen as a dance tradition in the Kamado family, Hinokami Kagura, which was passed down through generations along with Yoriichi’s hanafuda earrings.
That inheritance explains the connection between Yoriichi’s demonstration and Tanjiro’s later use of Hinokami Kagura. SEGA’s official character profile says Tanjiro remembered his late father’s kagura dance and applied its movements as he learned Hinokami Kagura. Aniplex of America’s official character page lists Tanjiro as using both Water Breathing and Hinokami Kagura.
