A full-spoiler manga guide to every named Demon Slayer character death, including Rengoku, Shinobu, the Hashira, Upper Ranks, Muzan, and the characters who survive.

Demon Slayer: Every Character Death And When They Occurred is best answered from the completed manga: the Kamado family dies before chapter 1, Rengoku dies in chapter 66, Shinobu in chapter 143, and the final battles claim several more. Tanjiro and Nezuko survive permanently, although both undergo apparent or temporary death-like transformations.

Full-manga spoilers: The guide below covers the completed Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga, including the Infinity Castle battles and the ending. The list uses named characters and clearly identified groups rather than attempting to count every unnamed casualty.

Chapter numbers are used instead of fictional calendar dates because the manga does not provide a complete real-world timeline for every death. Translated chapter titles may vary by edition, so chapter numbers are the safest way to check a scene.

Read-along option: For readers checking chapter-level details against the source, VIZ Media’s Demon Slayer complete manga box set contains all 23 volumes, an exclusive booklet, and a double-sided poster. Availability and price can change, and the box set is not a death index.

Key takeaways

  • The Kamado family massacre occurs before chapter 1, while Nezuko survives as a demon and Tanjiro survives to begin the story.
  • Kyojuro Rengoku dies in chapter 66 after the Mugen Train battle, making him the first major present-day Hashira to die.
  • Shinobu Kocho dies in chapter 143, but the wisteria poison prepared in her body helps Kanao and Inosuke defeat Doma in chapter 163.
  • Muichiro Tokito and Genya Shinazugawa die in chapter 179 after the Kokushibo battle; Kokushibo dies in chapter 176.
  • Tamayo dies in chapter 180, Nakime dies in chapter 183, and Muzan Kibutsuji is destroyed across chapters 200–201.
  • Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Kanao, Giyu, Sanemi, Tengen, and Yushiro survive the ending, although several suffer life-changing injuries or transformations.

What does this Demon Slayer character death list include?

This list uses the completed Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga as its canonical continuity. A death’s “when” means the manga chapter in which the death happens on-page or is confirmed, not a real-world calendar date, because the story does not provide a complete fictional calendar.

The guide focuses on named characters and clearly identified groups. The manga contains many unnamed civilians, Demon Slayer Corps members, temple victims, and demon victims whose deaths are not individually catalogued here, so no authoritative total number of deaths should be attached to this list.

Chapter titles can vary between Japanese editions and English translations. The chapter numbers are the more reliable reference point, and the wording below follows the supplied manga chronology. The Demon Slayer complete manga box set from VIZ Media contains all 23 volumes, an exclusive booklet, and a double-sided poster, making it the most direct physical source for checking the complete story.

Who dies before the main Demon Slayer story?

The earliest deaths occur in character backstories or before Tanjiro’s Final Selection, especially the Kamado family massacre and the deaths connected to Urokodaki’s students.

Character or group When What happens Story significance
Tanjiro and Nezuko’s family Before chapter 1 Muzan attacks the Kamado household and kills the family. Nezuko survives but is transformed into a demon. Tanjiro returns to the massacre, finds Nezuko alive, and begins his search for a cure and a way to defeat Muzan. The exact fictional date is not given. The official Demon Slayer character material identifies the Kamado family’s central role in the story.
Sabito Backstory, before chapter 1 Sabito dies during Final Selection before Tanjiro takes part in his own selection. Sabito’s spirit later helps train Tanjiro alongside Makomo.
Makomo Backstory, before chapter 1 Makomo, another former student of Sakonji Urokodaki, dies during Final Selection. Her spirit helps Tanjiro understand the training needed to break the boulder.
Kanae Kocho Before chapter 1; exact chapter presentation varies Doma kills Kanae, the former Flower Hashira and Shinobu’s older sister. Kanae’s death is the main reason Shinobu carries such intense hatred toward Doma.
Gyomei’s temple children Backstory A demon kills the children living under Gyomei’s care after one child betrays the temple. The deaths lead to Gyomei’s imprisonment and later recruitment into the Demon Slayer Corps.
Ruka Rengoku Backstory, before the Mugen Train arc Kyojuro Rengoku’s mother dies from illness. Ruka’s death shapes Kyojuro’s values and contributes to the broken history of the Rengoku family.
Akaza’s human family and dojo associates Infinity Castle flashback As Hakuji, Akaza loses his sick father, his fiancée Koyuki, and his future father-in-law after a rival dojo poisons them. These deaths precede Hakuji’s transformation into Akaza and explain the memories recovered before his final death.
Kokushibo’s human relatives and associates Michikatsu’s human-era flashback Michikatsu’s history includes deaths and separation among the people connected to his human life. These backstory losses precede his becoming Kokushibo and should not be confused with deaths during the final Demon Slayer campaign.

Which human and Demon Slayer Corps characters die in the present-day story?

The major present-day human deaths begin with Kyojuro Rengoku and accelerate during the final arcs. The following table gives the chapter, immediate cause, and consequence for each named Corps-side death covered by this guide.

Character Chapter and timing Immediate cause What follows
Kyojuro Rengoku Chapter 66, “Set Your Heart Ablaze” Akaza fatally wounds Rengoku after the Mugen Train battle. Rengoku remains alive long enough to speak with Tanjiro and the others before dying as dawn approaches. His death becomes the first major present-day Hashira loss.
Kagaya Ubuyashiki Chapter 138, “急転” The Corps leader sacrifices himself in the destruction of the Ubuyashiki estate. The explosion injures and restrains Muzan, creating the opening for the final confrontation.
Shinobu Kocho Chapter 143, “怒り” Doma kills and absorbs Shinobu during their Infinity Castle battle. Shinobu has deliberately saturated her body with wisteria poison. Her death therefore becomes part of the plan that weakens Doma enough for Kanao and Inosuke to defeat him.
Muichiro Tokito Chapter 179, “兄を想い弟を想い” Kokushibo fatally wounds Muichiro during the Upper Rank One battle. Despite his injuries, Muichiro contributes to the effort that makes Kokushibo’s defeat possible.
Genya Shinazugawa Chapter 179 Kokushibo cuts Genya apart, and Genya later fades away. Genya helps restrain Kokushibo and reaches an emotional reconciliation with his brother, Sanemi, before dying.
Tamayo Chapter 180, “恢復” Muzan kills Tamayo during the opening stages of the final confrontation. Tamayo’s anti-Muzan drug and her collaboration with the Corps remain strategically decisive even after her death.
Gyomei Himejima Chapter 200, after Muzan’s defeat Gyomei succumbs to injuries sustained in the final battle. He dies peacefully while surrounded by the spirits of the temple children.
Mitsuri Kanroji Chapter 200, after Muzan’s defeat Mitsuri dies from injuries sustained while fighting Muzan. She dies while being held by Obanai.
Obanai Iguro Chapter 200, after Muzan’s defeat Obanai succumbs to injuries from the final battle. He confesses his love for Mitsuri and promises to find her again in another life before dying shortly after her.

What is the difference between a character’s defeat and a confirmed death?

A demon can be defeated in one chapter and die only after regeneration stops, a curse activates, or the demon refuses to continue living. Human characters can also remain conscious briefly after receiving a fatal injury. This guide uses the chapter where the death is shown or confirmed, rather than the moment a winning attack begins.

Case How the manga handles the death Death chapter used here
Rengoku Akaza’s wound is fatal, but Rengoku speaks and remains alive briefly as dawn approaches. 66
Shinobu Doma kills and absorbs her, while her previously prepared poison continues working inside him. 143
Akaza Tanjiro and Giyu win the battle, but Akaza’s final death follows the return of his human memories and his refusal to keep regenerating. 156
Doma Shinobu’s poison weakens Doma from within before Kanao and Inosuke finish the battle. 163
Genya Genya is cut apart in chapter 179 and fades away afterward rather than vanishing at the instant of the attack. 179
Muzan The Corps holds Muzan until sunrise while Tamayo’s drug contributes to his physical decline. 200–201

Which demons die, and in what chapter?

The named demon deaths follow the story from the Asakusa conflict through the Upper Rank battles and the final confrontation. The chapter index and volume chronology are useful for checking chapter placement, while the chapter numbers below follow the completed manga.

Demon Chapter or story point How the demon dies Who or what enables the outcome
Yahaba Early Asakusa arc Tanjiro defeats Yahaba after the demon attacks him with directional arrows. Tanjiro turns Yahaba’s own attack against him.
Susamaru Early Asakusa arc Muzan’s curse activates when Susamaru reveals information about him, destroying her body from within. Muzan’s curse, rather than a standard Demon Slayer beheading, causes the death.
Rui Chapter 43, “To Hell” Giyu beheads Rui after Tanjiro’s battle with him. The death is followed by Rui’s human-life and family flashback, adding context to his distorted idea of family.
Enmu Chapter 62, “The Dream Ends” Tanjiro and the Mugen Train team defeat Enmu after he merges with the train and attacks its passengers. The coordinated defense of the passengers and the train makes Enmu’s defeat possible.
Gyutaro and Daki Chapter 97, “No Matter How Many Times” Tanjiro’s group severs both heads within the required timing. The Upper Rank Six siblings’ survivals are linked, so their deaths are treated as a joint defeat.
Gyokko Chapter 121, “異常事態” Muichiro defeats Upper Rank Five after awakening his mark and overcoming Gyokko’s transformed attacks. Muichiro’s marked state and improved swordsmanship turn the fight.
Hantengu Chapter 126, “彼は誰時・朝ぼらけ” Tanjiro finds and kills Hantengu’s hidden original body. Identifying the concealed true body ends the prolonged Swordsmith Village battle.

Akaza Chapter 156, “Thank You” Tanjiro and Giyu defeat Akaza, but Akaza’s final death follows the recovery of his human memories and his refusal to continue regenerating. Tanjiro and Giyu win the fight; Akaza’s recovered identity determines whether regeneration continues.
Doma Chapter 163, “心あふれる” Kanao and Inosuke defeat Doma after Shinobu’s accumulated poison weakens him from inside. Shinobu’s sacrifice and poison are essential to the final victory.
Kokushibo Chapter 176, “侍” Sanemi, Gyomei, Muichiro, and Genya combine their abilities to defeat Upper Rank One. Kokushibo’s regeneration fails after he confronts the monstrous result of his centuries-long transformation.
Nakime Chapter 183, “鬩ぎ合い” Yushiro takes control of Nakime, and Muzan kills her to stop the Infinity Castle from being turned against him. Yushiro’s control creates the threat; Muzan eliminates his own subordinate to prevent losing the castle.
Muzan Kibutsuji Chapters 200–201, final battle The Demon Slayer Corps holds Muzan until sunrise, and Muzan is destroyed. The Corps’ endurance combines with the effects of Tamayo’s drug to end the demon threat.

Which Hashira die?

Six major present-day Hashira die in the completed manga: Rengoku, Shinobu, Muichiro, Gyomei, Mitsuri, and Obanai. Giyu, Sanemi, and Tengen survive the ending, although Giyu and Sanemi are badly injured and Tengen has already retired from active Hashira duty.

Hashira Fate Chapter or timing Important qualification
Kyojuro Rengoku Dies 66 Akaza fatally wounds him after the Mugen Train battle.
Shinobu Kocho Dies 143 Her planned wisteria poisoning helps defeat Doma later.
Muichiro Tokito Dies 179 His final contribution helps bring down Kokushibo.

Tengen Uzui Survives After the Entertainment District arc He retires from active Hashira duty after losing an eye and an arm.
Kanae Kocho, former Flower Hashira Dies before the main story Before chapter 1; exact chapter presentation varies Doma’s killing of Kanae motivates Shinobu’s pursuit of him.

The final deaths of Gyomei, Mitsuri, and Obanai occur after Muzan is defeated, rather than during the instant of Muzan’s destruction. The ending chapter’s synopsis records the survivors and the post-battle consequences, including the deaths of the three injured Hashira.

Who dies in the Infinity Castle battles?

The deaths most closely associated with the Infinity Castle sequence are Shinobu, Akaza, Doma, Kokushibo, Muichiro, Genya, Tamayo, and Nakime. Arc boundaries can be labelled differently across guides, so the chapter number is the clearest way to identify each event.

Character Chapter Death circumstance
Shinobu Kocho 143 Doma kills and absorbs Shinobu, who has already made her body poisonous with wisteria.
Akaza 156 Akaza’s battle with Tanjiro and Giyu ends after he regains his human memories and stops regenerating.
Doma 163 Kanao and Inosuke finish Doma after Shinobu’s poison weakens him.
Kokushibo 176 The combined effort of Sanemi, Gyomei, Muichiro, and Genya defeats Upper Rank One.
Muichiro Tokito 179 Kokushibo’s wounds prove fatal after Muichiro helps make the demon’s defeat possible.
Genya Shinazugawa 179 Kokushibo cuts Genya apart, and Genya fades away after helping restrain him.
Tamayo 180 Muzan kills Tamayo at the opening of the final confrontation, but her drug continues affecting him.
Nakime 183 Muzan kills Nakime after Yushiro takes control of her and threatens his control of the Infinity Castle.

Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s death in chapter 138 happens before this sequence, during the destruction of the Ubuyashiki estate. Rengoku’s death in chapter 66 happens much earlier, after Mugen Train, so neither belongs to the Infinity Castle death list.

Does Tanjiro die?

Tanjiro Kamado does not permanently die. Muzan temporarily transforms Tanjiro into a demon after Muzan’s defeat, but Nezuko, Kanao, and the others restore Tanjiro to human life before the ending.

Does Nezuko die?

Nezuko Kamado does not die. Nezuko is endangered repeatedly and is briefly believed to be lost during the Swordsmith Village conflict, but she survives and eventually becomes human again.

Which other important characters survive?

The final battle has severe consequences, but the principal surviving characters include Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Kanao, Giyu, Sanemi, Tengen, and Yushiro.

Character Ending status What readers should remember
Tanjiro Kamado Survives as a human His temporary demon transformation is reversed and is not a permanent death.
Nezuko Kamado Survives as a human Nezuko survives the Swordsmith Village crisis and is restored to human life.
Zenitsu Agatsuma Survives Zenitsu remains alive after defeating Kaigaku in chapter 145.
Inosuke Hashibira Survives Inosuke survives the Doma battle and the final confrontation.
Kanao Tsuyuri Survives Kanao helps defeat Doma and remains alive at the ending.
Giyu Tomioka Survives Giyu is badly injured but remains alive after the final battle.
Sanemi Shinazugawa Survives Sanemi survives despite losing Genya and suffering serious injuries.
Tengen Uzui Survives in retirement Tengen remains alive after retiring from active Hashira service with permanent injuries.
Yushiro Survives as a demon Yushiro remains a demon after Muzan’s defeat and continues to exist after the Corps is disbanded.

The ending therefore is not a total extinction of the human cast. The largest permanent losses fall among the Hashira, the Ubuyashiki family leadership, Tamayo, Genya, and the named demons defeated throughout the campaign.

Why do the deaths matter to the story?

Each major death changes either the Corps’ tactical position or the emotional reason for the next battle. Rengoku’s death proves that even a Hashira can be overwhelmed by an Upper Rank demon and gives Tanjiro a lasting example of courage. Kagaya’s sacrifice converts his estate into the opening move of the Muzan battle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shinobu’s death is both a defeat and a delayed victory: Doma absorbs her, but the poison accumulated in her body makes his later defeat possible. Muichiro and Genya die during the Kokushibo fight, yet their actions help the surviving fighters overcome Upper Rank One. Tamayo’s death similarly does not erase her contribution, because her drug continues undermining Muzan during the final battle.

Gyomei, Mitsuri, and Obanai die only after the Corps has achieved its central objective. Their deaths emphasize the physical cost of holding Muzan in place until sunrise, while the survival of Tanjiro, Nezuko, and the other younger protagonists allows the story to end with the demon threat removed.

How should chapter numbers be checked?

Use chapter numbers rather than translated chapter titles when comparing editions. Japanese titles and English renderings can differ, and some deaths are technically confirmed after a character receives a fatal wound or is defeated.

  1. Check the battle’s end: Rengoku’s fatal injury occurs during the Mugen Train aftermath, but chapter 66 contains his final conversation and death.
  2. Separate sacrifice from immediate victory: Shinobu dies in chapter 143, while Doma’s defeat occurs in chapter 163.
  3. Track paired or delayed deaths: Gyutaro and Daki die as a linked pair in chapter 97, while Akaza’s defeat and final death unfold through the conclusion of his chapter 156 battle.
  4. Distinguish the final battle from its aftermath: Muzan is destroyed across chapters 200–201, while Gyomei, Mitsuri, and Obanai die after Muzan’s defeat, principally in chapter 200.

Readers checking an adaptation should also expect the anime’s episode structure and release schedule to differ from the manga’s chapter order. The chapter references above describe the completed manga, not an episode number or a real-world date.
