Sharif Atkins returned to a medical-drama set for Chicago Med Season 10, but not as a doctor: he plays Joe Thomas, a father whose son’s cancer has returned. Atkins said the experience brought back memories of ER, where he played Dr. Michael Gallant.
Who does Sharif Atkins play on Chicago Med?
Atkins plays Joe Thomas, the father of Max, a patient at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Joe and his wife, Gina, face devastating news when they learn that Max’s cancer has returned. The guest role puts Atkins on the family side of a medical crisis rather than in a white coat.

In TV Insider’s interview with Atkins, the actor described the change this way: “It’s being on the other side of the clipboard, right? I’m now the person being taken care of or looked after or what have you,”
What happens in his episode?
Atkins appears as Joe in “Bite Your Tongue,” listed as Season 10, Episode 2. The family’s immediate conflict is not only the cancer’s return but also what Max should be told: Joe and Gina disagree with Dr. John Frost about their son’s right to hear the truth about his condition.

Episode-date listings differ. TV Insider’s preview refers to it as the October 1 episode, while an IMDb news listing indexing the CBR interview identifies an October 2 premiere. Those references do not establish a single unambiguous premiere date.

He also remembered a specific detail from filming: “I remember the first scene that I did, Laura Innes was directing the episode, and I was taking some vitals for an elderly patient.” That first scene placed him back inside the rhythms of a hospital drama, now in a very different role.
