The Super Bowl LVIII trailer made the working label Deadpool 3 official: the film is Deadpool & Wolverine. It also confirms Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine, a TVA recruitment mission for Wade Wilson, and a collision between Fox’s X-Men history and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The trailer’s biggest confirmation: the official title
Marvel’s Super Bowl LVIII spot formally replaced “Deadpool 3” with Deadpool & Wolverine. The title makes Wolverine a central co-lead rather than a surprise cameo and signals that the film’s story is built around the relationship between Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Logan.

Jackman’s Wolverine previously appeared to die in Logan. The trailer does not explain how this version returns, but its multiverse premise allows the film to revisit the character without undoing that movie’s ending in its own timeline.
What the footage actually establishes
Wade is recruited by the TVA
The Time Variance Authority interrupts Wade’s birthday gathering and takes him to its headquarters. Matthew Macfadyen plays TVA agent Paradox, who offers Wade the opportunity to become “a hero among heroes.” The setup connects the film to the TVA introduced in Loki and gives Deadpool a route into Marvel Studios’ larger continuity.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
The mission leads to Wolverine
After the TVA intervention, Wade encounters Wolverine in the Void, the desolate realm associated with branched realities. The trailer shows Wolverine’s claws in silhouette and foregrounds Jackman’s return. The marketing also highlights a classic comic-inspired costume, although the early footage withholds most details about Logan’s identity and circumstances.
Deadpool predicts a universe-changing event
Wade addresses the stakes in typically self-important fashion: “Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever. I’m the messiah. I am… Marvel Jesus.” The line is a meta joke about Deadpool’s disruptive arrival in the MCU, not a confirmation that he has supernatural or religious status inside the story.

How the film bridges Fox’s X-Men world and the MCU
Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox left Marvel with access to the earlier X-Men film continuity but no simple handoff between universes. Deadpool & Wolverine uses the TVA and alternate realities as that connective tissue. Wade can meet characters and locations associated with Fox’s films while the TVA frames those encounters as part of a wider multiverse problem.
A fallen 20th Century Fox sign appears in the trailer, an overt visual marker of that corporate and cinematic transition. The image is an easter egg and a thematic statement: the movie is acknowledging the old franchise while moving its characters into Marvel Studios’ present-day framework.

Trailer evidence versus fan theories
Several images invite speculation, but they do not all have the same evidentiary status.
| Element | What is shown or reported | Status | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| TVA and Paradox | The TVA brings Wade to its headquarters, and Paradox presents the recruitment mission. | Confirmed trailer setup | Provides the story’s MCU entry point and links to Loki. |
| The Void | Wade and Wolverine are shown in a barren landscape identified as the Void. | Trailer-backed location | Supports a story involving discarded or divergent realities. |
| Pyro | Aaron Stanford returns as Pyro, seen in a dystopian-looking environment. | Confirmed appearance; setting’s full meaning unrevealed | Reconnects the film with Fox-era mutant characters. |
| 20th Century Fox sign | A damaged Fox sign appears among the trailer’s ruins. | Confirmed visual easter egg | Directly references the transition from Fox’s X-Men films to Marvel Studios. |
| “Patch” Wolverine | GamesRadar noted a possible visual resemblance to Wolverine’s “Patch” identity. | Interpretation, not confirmation | The costume or styling may reference comics, but the trailer does not name the persona. |
| Secret Wars comic | A copy of the comic is visible in the footage. | Confirmed prop; larger implication unconfirmed | It may nod toward Marvel’s multiverse saga without proving a specific plot connection. |
| Cassandra Nova | Some viewers have inferred the character from images and casting discussion. | Fan theory | The trailer does not confirm the identity. |
| Doctor Doom | Online speculation has linked the multiverse imagery to Doom. | Fan theory | No trailer dialogue or identified footage confirms Doom’s involvement. |

The R-rated, self-aware tone
Marvel Studios and Disney backed an R-rated approach, making this the studio’s first feature marketed with that rating. Director Shawn Levy described the creative brief as “extremely Deadpool-ian, audacious, R-rated” and “super meta, self-referential self-awareness.” That means the film can joke about superhero formulas, studio history and its own place in the MCU while still functioning as a multiverse adventure.

The trailer’s “Marvel Jesus” speech exemplifies that balance: Wade treats corporate continuity as a personal prophecy, turning a major franchise transition into a fourth-wall-breaking punchline.

What the trailer deliberately keeps secret
The trailer does not provide a complete, scene-by-scene plot. It establishes Wade’s removal from his ordinary life, Paradox’s TVA mission and the eventual meeting with Wolverine, but it does not explain the precise threat, the rules governing Wolverine’s reality or Emma Corrin’s role. Treating theories about Cassandra Nova, Doctor Doom or a specific Secret Wars storyline as confirmed would go beyond what the trailer shows.
Shawn Levy summed up the intended experience for the Associated Press as a movie “built for audience delight” and a “very fun ride.” The confirmed promise is therefore focused rather than fully plotted: Deadpool is being pulled into the MCU through the TVA, Wolverine is back, and the collision is designed to reshape the franchise’s on-screen boundaries.
