Deadpool & Wolverine gives Channing Tatum the chance to finally play Gambit—and makes the long wait part of the joke and the payoff. That can feel like enough without proving a solo film was unnecessary: a cameo can settle the question of whether Tatum ever got to inhabit the role, but it cannot show whether a full Gambit story would have succeeded.
Why Tatum’s Gambit movie never reached production
Tatum and producer Reid Carolin spent four years trying to develop a standalone Gambit film. The project was scuttled after Disney acquired Fox in 2019, a change that reshaped the studio context for characters previously associated with Fox’s X-Men films. The Credits’ account of the project and its reporting on Gambit’s history describe that development effort; neither provides evidence that a finished film was made or that its fate reflected a judgment of its quality.
Gambit, created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee, debuted in The Uncanny X-Men in 1990, according to The Credits. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president and a producer, said Disney’s Fox acquisition brought X-Men characters into Marvel’s available character pool, and described Deadpool & Wolverine as engaging with the history of Fox and those characters. Disney’s interview with Feige places Gambit’s appearance in that broader transition, rather than presenting it as a continuation of the abandoned solo project.
What the cameo accomplishes
Tatum ultimately played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. The Credits described the appearance as a substantial cameo and reported Tatum’s public gratitude to Ryan Reynolds for the opportunity. Its importance is not simply that the character appears: the film can make the audience aware of the years Tatum spent trying to play him, so the real-world development history becomes part of the moment’s emotional and comic texture.

Co-writer Rhett Reese explained the choice in an interview with The Credits, published by the Motion Picture Association on August 12, 2024: “Quite honestly, Channing Tatum [who repeatedly tried and failed to make a Gambit movie] as Gambit — by never getting screwed, he got screwed.” Reese was describing the creative team’s interest in Fox-universe heroes who had been underserved. The line frames the cameo as a response to a missed opportunity—not as evidence that a solo film could not have worked. Read Reese’s interview with The Credits.
Cameo and solo film offer different things
| What to compare | Deadpool & Wolverine cameo | Hypothetical solo film |
|---|---|---|
| Narrative scope | A supporting appearance within an ensemble and multiverse story. | Room to build an independent plot around Gambit; what that plot would have been is not established. |
| Character focus | Enough screen time to let Tatum play the role, but not the sustained development of a lead character. | Could have followed Gambit as the central character over a full story. |
| Tone | Comic and shaped by the film’s ensemble setting. | Tatum later described the Fox version as an “R-rated romantic comedy”; that is his retrospective account of an unmade project. |
| Payoff | Turns Tatum’s long wait to play Gambit into part of the audience’s understanding of the appearance. | Could have offered the payoff of seeing a complete Gambit-led story, which the cameo does not provide. |
These are differences of format and intention, not a quality ranking. In an October 2025 interview reported by CinemaBlend, Tatum said, “if we’d made our Fox version, that script would’ve never gotten made — ever.” He was recalling a project that never reached production, not reporting on a completed film or an independently verified studio decision. CinemaBlend’s October 11, 2025 interview presents his account of the planned tone.

TIME’s July 2024 reporting describes multiple director attachments and Tatum’s discussion of disagreements over Gambit’s portrayal and intended tone. That history reinforces how long and unsettled development was; it does not tell us how a finished movie would have played. TIME’s report on Tatum and Gambit provides that development context.

Only in a limited sense. If the question is whether Tatum ever got to play Gambit, the cameo supplies a satisfying answer. If the question is whether audiences needed a complete Gambit-led film, the appearance cannot settle it. A solo story could have developed the character at greater length and pursued the tone Tatum described; the cameo instead offers a concentrated payoff within another film’s story.
