What Shawn Levy said about Tatum’s Gambit
In an interview published by Variety on August 6, 2024, director, co-writer and producer Shawn Levy said he was delighted by Tatum’s take: “I am obsessed with Channing as Gambit in this movie.” He explained that the oddball dialogue was not all improvised: “We had scripted a lot of those borderline nonsensical lines. We wrote them into the screenplay.” Tatum then brought additional Cajun and French flavor to the delivery.
Levy also said the hard-to-follow delivery became part of the joke on set, reflected in Deadpool’s crack about needing a dialect coach. That is Levy’s description of the intended comic effect; it is not a judgment about Cajun speech generally.
Why Gambit’s dialogue and backstory fit together
Gambit’s peculiar delivery is only one part of the joke. In the Happy Sad Confused spoiler-special transcript, Levy said Gambit differed from the other legacy heroes because he “never really started.” The writing team was drawn to that contrast: Gambit arrives as a hero whose own film never came to be, rather than one returning from a completed screen franchise.

Levy described Tatum as joyful in the role and the performance as both absurd and badass. The character’s unrealized history gives the comedy a specific target, while Tatum’s confident presence keeps Gambit from being only a punchline.
How Tatum’s long pursuit of Gambit shaped the cameo
Tatum had spent years trying to bring Gambit to the screen in a Fox solo film that never reached production. Levy told Variety that he had been among the directors who met with Tatum about that project, and said Tatum had wanted the role for a decade. That history gave Levy firsthand context for why the eventual cameo mattered to the actor.

After the film’s premiere, Tatum expressed his own sense of that history in a message reported by ComicBook.com on July 30, 2024, thanking Ryan Reynolds and Levy and saying he had thought he had lost Gambit forever. That is Tatum’s retrospective account, not a production record. ComicBook.com notes that the Fox project went through multiple script iterations and director changes before it was abandoned; a more detailed timeline is not needed to understand the cameo.
What the stunt team brought to Gambit’s action
The physical performance was developed alongside the comic one. George Cottle, the film’s second-unit director and stunt coordinator, said the team discussed the characters’ direction with Levy and Reynolds and consulted Tatum about the cameo approach. In an interview with The Credits/CineMontage, Cottle identified Gambit’s playing cards and bo-staff as signature elements, and said Tatum understood the character and brought acrobatic ability to the action.

That combination matters: the scene’s humor comes from the written and performed delivery, but Gambit is also presented as a capable fighter. Cards, staff work and agile movement make the cameo feel like an action-hero appearance rather than a sketch built around the accent alone.

Levy’s comments explain why the performance struck him and the crew as funny, but they do not identify a specific post or clip as the origin of an online meme. The available reporting does not establish when a particular meme first circulated or how widely it spread, so it is more accurate to describe the performance’s comic ingredients than to credit one line with starting a trend.
