The October 9, 2026, announcement reporting named Wise Child Studios as the studio behind the project and CNN anchor Victor Blackwell among its producers. It did not provide a release date or distributor.
Who was Max Robinson?
Max Robinson was an American television journalist whose career broke barriers for Black journalists in local and national television news. Reporting on the documentary announcement says he became Washington, D.C.’s first African American local news anchor in 1969, joined ABC’s national evening newscast as one of three co-anchors in 1978, and co-founded the National Association of Black Journalists in 1975. These milestones are reported in contemporary coverage of the film announcement; the reports do not cite archival records for them.
Those achievements place Robinson’s story within both broadcast journalism and the wider history of Black representation in American newsrooms. Victor Blackwell, a producer on the film, described Robinson’s influence in terms of other barrier-breaking figures. Kicks & Grips quoted him saying, “Max Robinson is my Sidney Poitier. He’s my Thurgood Marshall, my Jackie Robinson.”
What will Color Bars cover?
The announced film is described as tracing the rise and fall of Robinson’s broadcast career and his legacy. Coverage also notes his struggles with alcohol abuse and his death from AIDS-related complications in December 1988, at age 49. Those parts of his history form context for the documentary, but they do not define the significance of his journalism or public legacy.

Porter said, “For me, Max Robinson was an exceptional journalist by any standard,” according to Kicks & Grips’ October 9, 2026, report on the project. The same report paraphrased Porter’s recollection that she watched Robinson at a time when few Black people appeared on evening news, and that colleagues at ABC News continued to discuss his influence after she joined the newsroom.
Who is directing and producing the film?
Porter is an established documentary filmmaker. Firelight Media’s profile lists work including John Lewis: Good Trouble, Bobby Kennedy for President, and The Way I See It. Trilogy Films describes itself as a nonfiction production company led by Porter. Those credits provide context for her work, but do not establish the approach or style of Color Bars.
