Simon & Schuster lists the U.S. hardcover publication date as March 10, 2026—rather than the March 17 date reported in the original announcement—and the book is available in print, ebook, and audiobook formats. A U.K. edition is dated March 26, 2026.
What Pogue’s Apple history covers
Apple: The First 50 Years is a broad corporate, technology, and cultural history running from Apple’s 1976 founding into its sixth decade. The U.S. description presents it as approximately 600 pages with 360 full-color photographs and about 150 new interviews, according to Pogue’s official site.

The narrative includes Apple’s founding, near-collapse, Steve Jobs’s return, and the Tim Cook era. It discusses major products and services including the Macintosh, iMac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods, alongside failures such as the Apple III, Lisa, and MobileMe.
Marketing for the book says Pogue examines commonly repeated Apple stories, including the idea that the company literally began in a garage, whether Steve Jobs was its first chief executive, and the role of a third founder. Those are themes and claims presented by Pogue and the book’s promotional material, not a guarantee that every point is an independently settled historical conclusion.

Why David Pogue is the author
Pogue has covered Apple and technology for decades. His background includes 13 years as a Macworld writer, 13 years as a New York Times technology columnist, and a long-running role on CBS Sunday Morning. He also wrote the Missing Manual series and numerous Mac and iPhone books, and the publisher says he hosted 20 PBS NOVA specials and has won seven Emmy Awards.
That experience gives the project the perspective of a technology journalist and broadcaster who followed Apple across multiple eras, rather than that of an official Apple publication.

Which format makes sense?
Hardcover
The hardcover best matches the project’s illustrated, reference-style design and is the strongest choice for collectors, gifts, and readers who want to study archival images. It is also the least portable option.
Ebook
The ebook costs less than the U.S. hardcover in the listed Apple Books price and is searchable and easy to carry. It does not provide the same physical presentation as the print edition.
Rank #4
Audiobook
The unabridged audiobook suits readers who mainly want the narrative and Pogue’s spoken presentation. A listening edition is a poorer fit for anyone buying the book primarily to examine its photographs and page layouts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should read it?
- Apple enthusiasts, collectors, and longtime users who want a visual overview.
- Readers interested in corporate turnarounds, product strategy, and technology history.
- People who followed Pogue’s journalism and want his author-driven account.
- Gift buyers seeking a substantial Apple-themed hardcover.
The 50-year scope necessarily favors breadth over exhaustive treatment of any one subject. Readers seeking a specialized Steve Jobs biography, an iPhone-only history, a design study, an investigation of Apple’s China operations, or a technical repair guide should choose a narrower book. Because the volume was produced for the 50-year milestone, it should not be treated as a definitive account of Apple developments after its reporting and production cutoff.
Best Value
Bottom line
Apple: The First 50 Years is now a released book, not merely a pre-order announcement. Its value is in combining Pogue’s long Apple journalism career with a large-format, illustrated survey of the company’s successes, failures, personalities, and product eras. Check the regional ISBN, price, and stock before ordering, especially if you are comparing U.S. and U.K. editions.
