After David Lynch died at 78 in January 2025, friends and collaborators remembered not only a singular filmmaker but a generous mentor, trusted creative partner and source of joy on set. Their tributes linked specific films and relationships—from Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks to Mulholland Drive and Wild at Heart—to the artistic freedom his work made possible.
Kyle MacLachlan said Lynch changed the course of his life
MacLachlan’s remembrance was both a tribute to a filmmaker and a reflection on the opportunity that launched his own career. Lynch cast him in Dune, his first major film role, and later worked with him on Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. In a statement shared on Instagram and reproduced by the Associated Press, MacLachlan wrote: “Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me out of obscurity to star in his first and last big budget movie. He clearly saw something in me that even I didn’t recognize. I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision.” The reflection frames Lynch’s influence as personal as well as artistic: he recognized potential in a young actor and gave him a defining opportunity.

Naomi Watts remembered a mentor who helped her believe in herself
Watts described Lynch’s influence in terms of creative mentorship and confidence. Her breakthrough role came in his Mulholland Drive; she later appeared in Twin Peaks. “His creative mentorship was truly powerful,” she wrote in an Instagram tribute reproduced by the Associated Press. Her words point to a relationship that extended beyond being cast: Lynch helped her find confidence in her abilities and establish herself in the industry.

Laura Dern recalled a friendship that grew out of Blue Velvet
Dern’s relationship with Lynch began when she was 17 and auditioned for Blue Velvet. In a letter published by the Los Angeles Times, she recalled: “At age 17, I walked into a casting office in 1985 to meet you for ‘Blue Velvet.’ You were the most unique and light-filled person I had ever seen.” Her remembrance describes a decades-long friendship and artistic partnership, not simply a recurring director-actor relationship. She also reflected on Lynch’s collaborative approach and invoked his book Catching the Big Fish, connecting their shared work to the curiosity and openness that shaped his creative life.

Nicolas Cage remembered the fun of working with Lynch
Cage’s tribute focused on the atmosphere Lynch created while making Wild at Heart. “I never had more fun on a film set than working with David Lynch,” he said in a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times. The recollection offers a glimpse of the pleasure Cage associated with the work, alongside the singular, often unsettling films audiences saw on screen.

Steven Spielberg praised Lynch’s originality as both filmmaker and actor
Spielberg remembered Lynch’s distinctive artistic voice and also their work together on The Fabelmans, in which Lynch appeared as John Ford. “The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice,” Spielberg said in a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times. He also praised the handmade quality of Lynch’s films and their lasting originality, seeing a filmmaker whose work remained unmistakably his own.

Other filmmakers and artists saw an influence that could not be copied
The tributes extended beyond Lynch’s close collaborators. Director Steven Soderbergh told the Associated Press: “He’s one of those filmmakers who was influential but impossible to imitate.” That distinction captures a central feature of Lynch’s legacy: other artists could be inspired by his creative freedom without reproducing his particular sensibility.
The AP roundup also included remarks from Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, musician Billy Corgan, Questlove, director James Gunn and filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun. Their responses broadened the picture of Lynch’s reach across film and music, emphasizing his distinctive creative logic, generosity and encouragement of experimentation. The roundup presents selected public responses, not a complete record of every remembrance.

The American Film Institute’s statement placed Lynch’s influence in the context of both his art and his support for other storytellers. It said: “Across the decades, David’s impact on cinema proved indelible in his films and his art — and he always gave back to AFI — supportive of the storytellers who wrote their own rules and reached for something different.” The institutional tribute echoed a theme running through the personal remembrances: Lynch’s example mattered not only because of the films he made, but because he encouraged others to pursue their own unconventional work.
