British writer, director and actor David Leland died on Christmas Eve 2023, aged 82. Liam Neeson, who starred in Leland’s 1990 film The Big Man, remembered him as a collaborative director and close friend. The cause of death was not disclosed in contemporaneous reports.

Who was David Leland?

Leland was a British actor, writer and director whose work spanned theatre, film and television over more than five decades, according to The Independent. He trained as an actor and worked in theatre, including productions at Sheffield’s Crucible and the Royal Court, before moving into screenwriting and directing.

His work crossed genres and formats: he wrote for film and television, directed feature films and television episodes, and continued a connection to the stage through his early career. The range of that work is part of why tributes came from actors whose paths with him differed.

What did Liam Neeson say about David Leland?

Neeson starred opposite Billy Connolly in Leland’s The Big Man (1990). In a tribute reported by The Independent, he called Leland “a real collaborator” who “genuinely loved and admired actors,” adding: “We formed a close bond.”

Neeson also remembered Leland’s “mischievous sense of humour,” writing: “You are always in my heart old friend. See you down the road.” The remarks reflect both their work together and a personal friendship.

How did other actors remember him?

Pierce Brosnan recalled that Leland gave him an early stage opportunity: the British premiere of Tennessee Williams’s The Red Devil Battery Sign. Brosnan said, “David Leland holds a mighty place in my heart,” according to The Independent.

Tim Roth, another actor who worked with Leland, described him as present “at the very beginning of this crazy adventure.” Roth added: “He changed my life, and I love him for it; I’ll keep him with me always.”

What films and television work is David Leland known for?

Writing and his directing debut

Leland wrote Personal Services and Made in Britain. His feature directorial debut was Wish You Were Here (1987), a film that brought him major recognition: RTÉ reported that it won the BAFTA for best original screenplay in 1988 and the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes. RTÉ’s report describes the awards and the tributes following his death.

Adams Time Chart Map of History Book: 23' Fold-Out 6,000 Yrs Bible World
  • Sebastian C. Adams was a 19th-century educator and minister who spent years drawing this chart by hand before publishing it in 1871. He wanted ordinary families to see how the Bible and world history fit together, not as two separate stories, but as one. This edition carries that same purpose: 21 full-size panels, a hardcover case that keeps them together, and a chart you can open with your children the way parents did more than a century ago.
  • There is something almost overwhelming about seeing six thousand years laid out side by side. While one kingdom rises, another is already fading. While prophets speak in one land, armies are marching in another. This synchronological chart places sacred and secular history in parallel columns, using the same Ussher chronology that generations of North American families learned in Sunday school. Parents will recognize it. Their children will see it for the first time.
  • Fold it open like a book, or stretch it across the floor and watch it run twenty-three feet from wall to wall. Twenty-one panels unfold into one continuous stream of time, from Creation to the late 19th century. This is the kind of thing you gather the family around on a Sunday afternoon, or leave on a classroom wall for a semester. Kids who see the whole sweep of history stretched out before them start asking questions you never expected.
  • This edition preserves the 19th-century voice of the original chart—its handwritten commentary, its period artwork, and the way it reads like a document from another time. It is the same chart that hung in libraries and classrooms in the 1870s, inviting readers to trace the rise and fall of nations, the lives of prophets and kings, and the quiet turning points that shaped the world. You are not just looking at history. You are reading it the way a 19th-century student would have.
  • Some resources are meant to be studied. This one is meant to be lived with. Homeschool families use it as a spine for world history. Bible study groups unfold it on a long table. Parents tell us their kids keep it open on the floor, tracing the line from Adam to Abraham to David to Christ. It also makes a gift that says something: here is the whole story, from the beginning, in your hands.

Films and television directing

His directing credits included The Big Man (1990), starring Neeson and Connolly, and The Land Girls (1998). For television, he directed an episode of Band of Brothers and worked on The Borgias, as reported by The Independent and RTÉ.
