His career ranged from the Dolls’ glam-inflected proto-punk to the lounge-singer persona Buster Poindexter, film acting and a late-life concert portrait directed by Martin Scorsese.
Why David Johansen mattered to the New York Dolls
Johansen was the New York Dolls’ frontman and a songwriter, helping define the band’s unruly combination of glam-rock theatricality and proto-punk energy. The group’s sound and look helped shape later punk and glam acts. Calling Johansen a punk pioneer is a description of that influence, not an official title or a claim that the Dolls alone created punk.

The band’s first two studio albums were New York Dolls (1973), produced by Todd Rundgren, and Too Much Too Soon (1974), produced by Shadow Morton. Neither album charted, but their lasting importance is better understood through their influence than through chart performance.
The Dolls’ breakup and reunion
The original run
The New York Dolls disbanded in 1976 after a turbulent period marked by personnel changes. Johansen’s career continued beyond the band, but the group’s early records remained the central point of reference for its sound and reputation.
#1 Best Overall
- When the New York Dolls released their debut album in 1973, they managed to be named both "Best New Band" and "Worst Band" in Creem Magazine's annual reader's poll, and it usually takes something special to polarize an audience like that
Returning to the band
Morrissey helped bring surviving members together for the 2004 Meltdown Festival. Johansen and guitarist Sylvain carried the Dolls forward with further albums: One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This (2006), Cause I Sez So (2009) and Dancing Backwards in High Heels (2011).
What Johansen did as Buster Poindexter
In the 1980s, Johansen adopted Buster Poindexter, a lounge-singer persona that contrasted sharply with the Dolls’ noisy, glam-driven band identity. The most widely recognized Poindexter recording was a 1987 cover of “Hot Hot Hot.” It was a change in musical character and presentation by the same performer, not a separate artist unrelated to Johansen.

Acting and the final concert portrait
Johansen also worked as an actor. One of his most familiar film roles was the Ghost of Christmas Past opposite Bill Murray in Scrooged (1988).
The documentary Personality Crisis: One Night Only (2023), directed by Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi, offers a later portrait through footage from Johansen’s January 2020 Café Carlyle performance, archival material and interviews. It places the stage performance alongside the history behind the persona, making it an accessible entry point for viewers who know him through the Dolls, Poindexter or his screen work.

A performer who kept changing the frame
Johansen’s career was not confined to one band or one musical identity. The Dolls made theatricality part of a confrontational rock sound; Buster Poindexter let him inhabit a very different kind of stage character; acting and the documentary brought other dimensions of his performance into view. In a 2023 Associated Press interview, he put his approach simply: “At some point in my life, I decided: ‘Just sing the (expletive) song. With whatever you got.’”
