Answer key and career context

1. B — Natural sciences

Attenborough studied natural sciences at Clare College, University of Cambridge, and graduated in 1947. The Australian Museum’s biography also dates his BBC arrival to 1952, when he joined as a television producer.

2. C — Television producer

His early BBC work was behind the camera, including research and program planning; Hachette describes him as a trainee producer. Presenting was a later turn in his career.

3. B — Animal Disguises

Guinness World Records identifies Animal Disguises as his first on-screen appearance, in a BBC Children’s Television broadcast on 2 September 1953. That is distinct from his move into presenting on Zoo Quest the following year.

4. B — The planned presenter fell ill

Zoo Quest began in 1954. Attenborough already knew the production as a producer involved in its research and planning, and stepped in when the planned presenter became ill. Hachette gives the series’ span as 1954–64.

5. A — Controller of BBC Two

Hachette dates Attenborough’s tenure as Controller of BBC Two to 1965–68, followed by Director of Programmes for BBC Television from 1969–72. In that leadership work, he commissioned programs including The Ascent of Man and The Old Grey Whistle Test, according to BAFTA’s account of his 2009 Life in Television event.

6. B — Returned to documentary-making and writing

After leaving administration in 1973, Attenborough returned to making documentaries and writing. That shift led into a succession of major natural-history series.

7. C — Life on Earth

Life on Earth (1979) preceded The Private Life of Plants (1995), The Blue Planet (2001) and Planet Earth (2006). Other selected landmarks include The Living Planet (1984), The Trials of Life (1990), Life of Birds (1998), Life of Mammals (2002) and Life in Cold Blood (2008). The titles and dates are a selection, not a complete filmography.

8. B — A particular technical advance

At a Brighton Festival event on 19 May 2009, Attenborough said, “Almost every series has been stimulated by a particular technical advance.” He described how improvements made it possible to combine picture and sound and film in forests, opening up new subjects and locations for television natural history. BAFTA’s event account records his remarks.
