Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette in a New York Times guest essay published March 6, 2026. She said the character did not accurately reflect her life, conduct or relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr., and denied several actions attributed to the character. The dispute concerns the series’ dramatic depiction—not independently established facts about Hannah’s conduct.
What Daryl Hannah said about ‘Love Story’

AP quoted Hannah as saying: “The character ‘Daryl Hannah’ portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John.”
Hannah denied that she used cocaine or hosted cocaine-fueled parties, pressured anyone into marriage, desecrated a family heirloom, intruded on a private memorial, planted a story in the press, or compared Jacqueline Onassis’ death to a dog’s. These are her denials of conduct attributed to the character; the disputed scenes should not be treated as verified history. AP’s report covered the essay and her response.

Why Hannah called the portrayal false
The Los Angeles Times reported that Hannah described the portrayal as misogynistic and said the show made false “assertions about conduct.” The paper also reported that she received hostile and threatening messages from viewers after the series began airing. The Los Angeles Times’ coverage reported those claims; the available reporting does not independently establish every detail of the former relationship or the series’ scenes.

Producer Nina Jacobson explained the character’s narrative function in terms of the audience’s investment in the central couple. AP quoted her saying: “Given how much we’re rooting for John and Carolyn, Daryl Hannah occupies a space where she’s an adversary to what you want narratively in the story.”

Jacobson also said the creators try to approach real-life characters with compassion and give them dimension, AP reported. Her explanation addresses the storytelling perspective; it does not verify the behavior Hannah disputes. AP said FX had no immediate comment when asked about Hannah’s claims at the time of its report. That describes the response reported then, not the company’s position at a later date.
