Jackson Browne’s son Ethan Browne died from the effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine and lidocaine, according to the Los Angeles Times and Us Weekly, citing the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s findings. The Independent also reported that the death was ruled accidental, but its account named methamphetamine and lidocaine and did not mention fentanyl.
What was Ethan Browne’s cause of death?
The Los Angeles Times reported on January 14, 2026, that the Medical Examiner attributed Ethan Browne’s death to the effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine and lidocaine. Us Weekly published the same three-substance list a day earlier, citing documents it obtained. The Independent’s January 14 account named methamphetamine and lidocaine but omitted fentanyl, so the published accounts do not give identical lists.
The Los Angeles Times linked to the county Medical Examiner’s case page for case 2025-18464. The accessible page does not display the findings, so the substance list here reflects the outlets’ attributed reporting rather than an independently readable copy of the case record. See the Los Angeles Times report, Us Weekly report and The Independent report.
Was the death ruled accidental?
Us Weekly and The Independent reported that the manner of death was accidental. The Los Angeles Times article did not state the manner. The county Medical Examiner’s glossary distinguishes cause—the injury or disease leading to death—from manner, which describes how a death came about; that general distinction does not independently confirm the individual case finding. The official case page is Los Angeles County Medical Examiner case 2025-18464.
