The eight-episode season premiered February 15, 2026, on AMC and AMC+. Its escalating pursuit, a dangerous new antagonist and a pivotal shootout give this season a strong claim to being the series’ most intense—though that is a judgment about its story and craft, not a measured comparison with earlier seasons.
What is Dark Winds Season 4 about?
Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) leave Navajo Nation for 1970s Los Angeles to search for a missing Navajo girl. Their race to find her brings them into the orbit of an obsessive killer with organized-crime ties. AMC described the season as eight hour-long episodes, released weekly on Sundays after its February 15, 2026 premiere. AMC’s series page lists Season 4 on AMC+; availability can vary by region.

The change of setting expands the scale of the case without leaving behind the show’s focus on its investigators and their relationships. The result is a season shaped by both pursuit and pressure: the characters must work across unfamiliar terrain while the danger becomes more personal.
Why does this season feel especially intense?
The search pushes the team beyond familiar ground
The investigation’s move from Navajo Nation to Los Angeles gives the central trio a different environment to navigate as they try to locate the girl before the killer does. The urgency comes from the story’s stakes and the distance the characters must cover, rather than from any published measure that ranks Season 4 against previous seasons.

A shootout and a dangerous new antagonist raise the tension
Season 4’s premiere includes a pivotal shootout in a purpose-built diner set. McClarnon, who directed the second episode, told AMC that he found the action sequences daunting at first. He singled out the diner sequence’s slowed music, camera angles and lighting as ways the scene builds an unsettling mood. He also described Irene Vaggan, played by Franka Potente, as a particularly dangerous antagonist for Leaphorn. McClarnon’s AMC interview offers his perspective on the directing work.
Emotional strain runs alongside the case
The season also gives weight to Chee and Bernadette’s relationship and to Chee’s experience of “ghost sickness.” Matten describes the idea as a symbol of unexpressed inner turmoil, while Gordon talks about how that turmoil festers in Chee. Those are the actors’ interpretations of the drama, not a definition of Diné belief. In the same AMC conversation, Matten recalls McClarnon offering Gordon blocking suggestions during a flirtation scene; Gordon says their real-life friendship made him feel rigid. Their interview connects the on-screen tension with a lighter account of working together.

What did the set visit reveal about filming?
A TV Insider visit reported that the production films around Santa Fe, New Mexico, primarily at and near Camel Rock Studios on Tesuque land. The former Camel Rock Casino serves as a production hub: its patterned carpet and murals remain part of the building, while sets were constructed for locations including Leaphorn’s home and a Los Angeles Indian Health Service site. TV Insider’s February 18, 2026 set visit describes the locations and production choices.

A diner built for a pivotal scene
The diner used in the premiere’s shootout was built a few hundred feet from the studio. TV Insider reported that construction took roughly two weeks. Wall signage, red cups and period-appropriate technology helped establish its 1970s setting. Executive producer Tina Elmo described filming the diner at night, when its lighting made the place seem isolated.
Sets and nearby footage helped stretch the schedule
The production combined existing studio interiors with nearby exteriors and second-unit drone footage. For example, a police-station interior could be filmed at the studio while a second unit captured an exterior nearby. Elmo explained the approach in the context of a production nearing its finish and needing to stay within its time and budget. She also said a prison visitor room reused the shell of a Border Patrol set.

What producers said about filming on Indigenous land
Elmo said the production avoided sacred sites and turned over found artifacts for identification. She credited Tesuque Pueblo and said some filming also takes place in Navajo Nation, while land near the studio can double for it. These are the production representative’s descriptions of its practices, not an independent assessment. Elmo also said students from the nearby Institute of American Indian Arts intern on set. AMC separately discussed an internship connection involving Matten’s Counting Coup Indigenous Film Academy (CCIFA); the two programs are distinct.

Season 4 marks McClarnon’s television directorial debut. He directed Episode 2 and told AMC that the action sequences initially made the assignment feel frightening. He credited cinematographer Blake Evans, first assistant director Dennis Crow, Chris Eyre, Tina Elmo and the wider crew with supporting his first directing experience. His account adds another dimension to the season’s tension: the person playing Leaphorn was also shaping how the episode’s suspense reached the screen. Read McClarnon’s account of the episode.

How does Season 4 relate to Tony Hillerman’s novels?
Dark Winds is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee novels. Showrunner John Wirth identifies The Ghost Way as the book connected to Season 4, while noting that Leaphorn appears only lightly in it. The television series therefore invents story material to keep Leaphorn central. Wirth describes the show and novel as separate creations rather than a literal transcription. Wirth’s Creative Screenwriting interview discusses the adaptation and the show’s storytelling choices.
In that interview, Wirth also explains that the series avoids depicting private ceremonial content. He describes the Season 4 ghostway sequence as showing guests arriving and characters entering a hogan before the door is covered, while withholding the ceremony itself. He has also said Chee’s symptoms may be real or imagined, leaving viewers to decide. These comments explain the showrunner’s approach to the fictional series; they are not an authoritative account of Diné ceremony or belief. Wirth’s discussion of overlapping police agencies similarly describes the drama’s writing, not current jurisdictional law.
Has Dark Winds been renewed for Season 5?
Yes. AMC renewed the series on February 5, 2026, for an eight-episode Season 5. At the time of that announcement, filming was planned to begin in Santa Fe in March 2026, with a 2027 debut planned. Those dates reflect AMC’s announced schedule at that time, rather than a guarantee that the plan remains unchanged. AMC’s renewal announcement contains the dated plan.
