What is Dark Winds Season 4 about?
The eight-episode season follows Navajo Tribal Police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) as they search for a missing Navajo teenager who left a Catholic boarding school. Their investigation takes them from Navajo Nation to 1970s Los Angeles, where an obsessive killer with ties to organized crime is also looking for the girl. AMC announced the season as hour-long episodes released weekly on Sundays, beginning February 15, 2026, on AMC and AMC+.

Netflix Tudum’s July 4, 2026 guide adds the personal stakes for Leaphorn: after the consequences of his vigilante killing in Season 3, Emma (Deanna Allison) has left him, and Joe recognizes that the job has changed him. He means to solve one final case, retire and try to win Emma back. That goal gives the missing-person investigation a second purpose: it is not only a race to find the girl, but also the last case Joe hopes to finish before leaving the work behind.
Does the Los Angeles setting change the show’s Western noir?
The move to Los Angeles is the season’s clearest departure from the show’s familiar reservation setting. It broadens the crime story into an urban world shaped by a crime ring, stolen luxury goods and drug trafficking, but the change matters most when it presses on the relationships and responsibilities the series has established at home. The investigators are not simply entering a new backdrop; they are following a Navajo teenager whose search for a connection to her people reaches beyond the school she has left.

That premise gives the season room to set the machinery of organized crime against questions of identity, belonging and the officers’ ties to their community. The balance is crucial: the Los Angeles plot can supply a different kind of danger, but the story’s emotional center remains Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito—and the consequences of the work they do.
Who is the new villain?
AMC describes the threat as an obsessive killer connected to organized crime. Its cast materials separately identify Titus Welliver’s Dominic McNair as a ruthless Los Angeles crime boss who moves drugs and stolen luxury goods. They do not establish that McNair is the obsessive killer, so those roles should not be treated as interchangeable based on the official season descriptions alone.

- On a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley in 1971, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee, who has his own old scores to settle.
The season also introduces Franka Potente as Irene Vaggan, Isabel DeRoy-Olson as Billie Tsosie, the resourceful teenager at the heart of the search, Chaske Spencer as Sonny, a recruiter for a Los Angeles crime ring, and Luke Barnett as FBI Special Agent Toby Shaw. A. Martinez returns as Acting Chief Gordo Sena. These characters place the case in a wider network of people and institutions, rather than reducing its danger to one confirmed identity.
How does the season follow Joe Leaphorn’s story?
Joe’s grief, his separation from Emma and his wish to retire give the season a personal throughline alongside the pursuit of the missing girl. His final-case plan is an uneasy one: he hopes to leave the job, but he is still the person the case requires. The tension between those aims connects the crime plot to the changes in Joe that followed his actions in Season 3.

That focus also keeps the season’s shift in scale from becoming a substitute for character development. Chee and Manuelito join Joe in Los Angeles, while his attempt to imagine a life beyond the badge remains bound up with the people and work he may be leaving.
What stands out behind the camera?
McClarnon makes his television directing debut with Season 4’s second episode, adding a notable craft dimension to a season already centered on his performance as Leaphorn. Linda Hamilton appears in the premiere as Barbara Sena, Gordo’s wife, who is grappling with memory loss.

The series is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee books. AMC showrunner and executive producer John Wirth described the show as a “traditional crime story set on the Navajo Nation in 1972.” That is an attributed description from AMC’s renewal announcement, not a neutral summary of every part of a season whose investigation now extends to Los Angeles.
