Spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episodes 2, 4 and 7. Episode 4 may have tipped viewers off to Muse’s identity through its guest-star credits: Hunter Doohan was listed despite not appearing recognizably in the episode. The clue pointed back to his earlier role as Bastian, but it was not an on-screen confirmation. Episode 7 later made the reveal explicit: Doohan plays Bastion Cooper, the artist known as Muse.
How Episode 4’s credits pointed to Muse
The clue was a credit, not a reveal in the episode’s dialogue or action. Episode 4 listed Hunter Doohan among its guest stars, although reports said he did not appear recognizably in that episode’s Muse sequence. That credit prompted viewers and entertainment outlets to connect him to the masked killer.

The connection led back to Episode 2, where Doohan appeared as Bastian, a nervous young man who approaches therapist Heather Glenn and asks whether she will treat him. At the time, the scene introduced a minor character; the later credit made it look like a possible hint that Bastian and Muse were the same person. The Direct and ComicBookMovie.com reported on the credit clue and the earlier appearance. The Direct and ComicBookMovie.com treated it as an inference, not an official identity confirmation at that point.
Episode 7 confirmed who Muse is
Season 1, Episode 7 answered the question directly: Muse is Bastion Cooper, played by Doohan. The episode supplies a backstory that connects Bastion’s identity as an artist to Heather’s psychological work. That later scene turns the earlier credit clue into a correct inference; it does not mean Episode 4 itself named him as Muse. ComicBook.com’s Episode 7 coverage and The Ringer’s recap discuss the reveal and backstory.

Why Muse matters to the series’ larger conflict
The show’s creative team describes Muse as more than a separate villain-of-the-week. Showrunner Dario Scardapane called him “a stressor in this story,” referring to the ripple effect he creates in the battle between Fisk and Matt Murdock. Executive producer Sana Amanat similarly said, “He is an important stressor for the conflict of Fisk and Matt Murdock.”
TVLine reported those comments and noted that the producers did not confirm Doohan’s casting in the interview; the credits gave viewers a clue to interpret. TVLine’s interview with the creative team places Muse’s role in the wider story without treating the earlier credit as confirmation.

How the series’ Muse differs from the comics
Muse debuted in Daredevil #11 in 2016, during the Charles Soule and Ron Garney run. In the comics accounts cited by entertainment coverage, his civilian identity and detailed personal history remain undisclosed. The series takes the opposite route by giving him a name—Bastion Cooper—and an origin story.
| Aspect | Comics | Daredevil: Born Again |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Civilian identity is undisclosed in the cited coverage. | Named as Bastion Cooper in Season 1, Episode 7. |
| Backstory | Personal history is left sparse in the cited accounts. | Episode 7 gives Bastion a personal history connected to Heather Glenn. |
| Abilities | Coverage describes enhanced strength and speed, and an ability to evade Daredevil’s senses. | Presented in a more grounded way; the series does not explain his fighting ability through those supernatural traits. |
| Story function | A threat to Daredevil. | A threat within the story and, as the producers put it, a catalyst in the conflict between Matt and Fisk. |
Both versions retain Muse’s disturbing artistic method involving victims’ blood. The comparison of his comic abilities and television portrayal is discussed in ComicBook.com’s coverage; the series’ identity reveal is also covered by The Ringer.
