Blake Crouch’s adaptation centers on a man trying to find his way back to his family and his life—not on expanding a franchise. That is a case for a different kind of multiverse story, not an objective verdict that it beats every Marvel title.
What is Apple TV+’s Dark Matter about?
Based on Blake Crouch’s novel, the sci-fi thriller follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man in Chicago who is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Jennifer Connelly plays his wife, Daniela; the ensemble also includes Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley. Apple frames the story around “the road not taken.” Its first season has nine episodes. Apple’s season-one announcement describes the premise and cast.

Is Dark Matter better than Marvel’s multiverse?
It depends on what you want the multiverse to do. Dark Matter makes alternate realities a way to examine family, identity, regret, and the consequences of choices. Marvel’s multiverse stories, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Loki, operate in a superhero and franchise context. The comparison is useful because both draw on parallel worlds, but it is not a like-for-like contest in scale or purpose. Kirkus’s genre commentary places the series among recent multiverse fiction that includes those Marvel examples.
#1 Best Overall
The distinction is also central to the project’s creative intent. In a May 2024 interview with TIME, executive producer Matt Tolmach said he was drawn to “this idea playing out in a very grounded world, among very relatable characters—not superheroes, ordinary people exploring the roads not taken.” Crouch likewise discussed wanting characters viewers care about as a way to stand apart amid the multiverse trend. Where the series has the stronger case
- Personal stakes: Jason’s effort to get back to his wife and son gives the parallel worlds an immediate emotional purpose. The Guardian’s review emphasizes that family-driven pull.
- A grounded tone: Its central appeal is ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, rather than superheroes managing a sprawling set of franchise consequences.
- A focused premise: The alternate lives matter because they sharpen the questions of who Jason is and what he values, not simply because they add more worlds to explore.
The Guardian called it a fun multiverse thriller, highlighting Jason’s attempt to return to his family.
What may work less well
The show’s science language is part of its style, but it may not persuade every viewer. The Los Angeles Times notes that terms such as superposition and entanglement function as both science-fiction devices and literary metaphors. That can lend the story a conceptual frame; it does not mean the series should be treated as a scientific explanation of quantum mechanics. A viewer’s response will depend on whether the rules feel clear enough to sustain the drama and whether the season’s momentum holds.
The Los Angeles Times review discusses the show’s use of quantum terminology. These are selected critical perspectives, not evidence of universal agreement among reviewers.

Is it worth watching if you’re tired of multiverse stories?
It may be, if your fatigue is with stories that treat alternate universes mainly as spectacle, cameos, or franchise machinery. Dark Matter puts its emphasis on one character’s relationships and the life he is trying to recover. If the multiverse premise itself has worn thin for you, changing the emotional focus may not be enough; the series still depends on alternate realities and their rules to drive its thriller plot.
