The result is less a clean victory than a character-driven finale that ends with Matt calling for an army. Now that Season 2 has premiered, that cliffhanger reads as the launch of an organized resistance—not merely a promise of a bigger brawl.
What happens in “Straight to Hell”
The finale opens with Matt recovering after taking a bullet for Fisk, while the mayor moves to consolidate his power and the Anti-Vigilante Task Force hunts vigilantes. Frank Castle is waiting for Matt, and the two fight their way through the task force. Their alliance brings a familiar moral conflict back to the screen: Daredevil tries not to kill, while the Punisher’s approach is lethal.

Karen arrives to help get them out. Later, she accompanies Matt as he seeks Foggy’s files, connecting the returning characters to both the action and Matt’s grief and investigation. The reunion gives the finale much of its emotional lift: Karen anchors Matt’s resistance in personal history, while Frank brings force—and friction—into the fight.
The ending shifts the stakes from escape to survival under political power. Fisk’s campaign against vigilantes escalates toward martial law, leaving Matt with no easy win and a city in need of resistance. His final declaration, “We’re going to need an army,” turns the ending into a call to organize.

Why Punisher and Karen’s returns matter
Frank Castle brings conflict as well as backup
Frank’s return is exciting because he is not simply another fighter on Matt’s side. Their shared battle makes the tactical contrast between them unavoidable: Matt’s restraint and Frank’s lethal violence are different answers to the same threat. That tension gives the action a character stake beyond whether they can overpower the task force.
Karen reconnects the crisis to Matt’s personal life
Karen’s role is practical—she helps the men escape—and emotional. Her later partnership with Matt as he seeks Foggy’s files gives the finale a thread of investigation and remembrance amid its political crackdown. The result is a more grounded resistance: Matt is not acting in a vacuum, but alongside people bound to him by loss, history and shared risk.
What the cliffhanger means now that Season 2 is out
At the end of Season 1, “We’re going to need an army” sounds like an immediate response to Fisk’s escalating rule. Season 2 makes the line’s larger meaning explicit. In a March 23, 2026 feature, showrunner Dario Scardapane said Fisk’s hunt forces people who have not chosen a side to do so. He described the personal cost of that choice: “Each character comes to a point where they have to make a decision and they have to choose a side — and each one of them, in making that decision, has to pay a price.”

That framing makes the cliffhanger about complicity and political power as much as fighting. The “army” is an organized resistance formed as Fisk’s pursuit of vigilantes pushes people to decide whether to help, stay quiet or oppose him. Disney’s official Season 2 synopsis describes Matt fighting from the shadows to tear down Fisk’s corrupt empire and redeem New York.
Season 2 premiered March 24, 2026, and Disney+ lists eight episodes. Disney’s feature says Karen uses her connections to broaden the resistance and uncover Fisk’s crimes. It also identifies Bullseye and Jessica Jones among the returning characters. These are developments Season 1’s finale set up, but the released season—not the cliffhanger alone—confirms them.

Rotten Tomatoes listed the episode at 90% from 10 reviews when accessed October 8, 2026. That is a dated critic-aggregate snapshot, not an audience score or a permanent measure of consensus; the page lists the episode’s air date as April 15, 2025.

The critical response includes different views of the tonal shift and the returning cast. Caroline Siede, writing for Episodic Medium on April 23, 2025, described the finale as a “somewhat jarring tonal shift” while praising the impact of the returning cast. IGN’s Joshua Yehl rated it 9/10 and called it a satisfying finale that sets up a major Season 2 challenge; that assessment appears as an attributed excerpt on Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page, dated April 17, 2025.
