In “With Interest,” Matt Murdock protects a bank full of hostages without putting his Daredevil suit back on. That tension gives the largely self-contained episode its purpose: the question is no longer whether Matt can act like a hero, but when he will accept what that means. The bank crisis is an enjoyable showcase for his senses and ingenuity, even as its pause from the season’s wider conflicts makes its place in the story less certain.
What happens in “With Interest”
Episode 5, “With Interest,” aired March 25, 2025, and is rated TV-MA, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Matt visits New York Mutual Bank to seek a loan for his law practice. The assistant manager, Yusuf Khan—father of Kamala Khan, better known as Ms. Marvel—helps with the meeting.
Then armed robbers take customers hostage. Matt returns to the bank and works with Yusuf to stall them while he reads the room through sound and works out how to undermine their plan. He listens to the vault mechanism to open it, and later offers the robbers a fake diamond to buy the hostages time. When the leader gets away dressed as a police officer, Matt follows in a red ski mask borrowed from one of the robbers. The episode closes with Matt and Yusuf reconnecting after the ordeal.
Matt is already acting like Daredevil—just not dressed as him
The episode’s central image is not Matt reclaiming his familiar suit. He has been contemplating a broken devil horn and the possibility of returning to it, but the robbery draws him into vigilantism before he makes that formal choice. The borrowed red mask marks the gap: he is no longer simply a lawyer caught in a crisis, yet he has not fully resumed the public identity and uniform of Daredevil.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes “Can Matt just put the horns back on already?” a useful question, but not quite the one the episode answers. Matt proves he can still protect people and fight. The unresolved issue is whether he is ready to embrace the consequences of doing so as Daredevil again.
Does the bank-robbery story work on its own?
Nerdist describes “With Interest” as the series’ first truly standalone, bottle-like episode so far. Its contained setting gives the story a clear engine: Matt must keep a group of people safe while hiding his abilities and finding a way to disrupt the robbers. The vault sequence and the fake-diamond gambit let his legal reasoning, hearing and combat skills contribute to the same rescue rather than reducing the episode to a string of fights.

The trade-off is season momentum. The Ringer argues that the episode does little to advance the season’s central plots, though it moves Matt closer to embracing his return. That distance from the larger story can feel like a welcome change of pace or an interruption, depending on how much a viewer wants each installment to propel the season. As a focused character exercise, the detour earns its time; as a link in the season’s broader conflicts, it is deliberately modest.
Sound turns Matt’s abilities into suspense
The Ringer notes the episode’s use of blurred screen edges and amplified sounds, including heartbeats, to convey Matt’s aural focus. The technique gives viewers a more immediate sense of what he is tracking and helps make the hostage situation tense without relying only on what he can see. It also makes his perception part of the problem-solving: listening is how he navigates the bank and gets into the vault.

Does the lighter approach fit the series?
Processed Media reads the episode as unusually separate from the show’s preceding tone and plotlines, and questions whether its streamlined superhero setup leaves too little room for Matt’s established inner conflict. That is a critical interpretation, not a settled verdict. The contained story can also be read as a purposeful change of register: for one episode, the focus is on Matt’s resourcefulness under pressure and the incremental return of his heroic instincts.
Reviewer Randy Dankievitch called it “the most tonally consistent episode of Daredevil: Born Again to date.” His praise came with a qualification: in his view, that consistency risks sacrificing some of the show’s voice and Matt’s personal conflict. The tension between a cleaner, more traditional superhero episode and the messier character drama is part of what makes this installment divisive in effect, even when its basic rescue plot is easy to follow.
