Matt Murdock’s defense of Hector Ayala turns a courtroom case into a public debate over whether the White Tiger is a hero or a criminal. The jury acquits Ayala, but his return to vigilantism ends in a killing—and the episode does not reveal who fired the shot.
What is Daredevil: Born Again episode 3 called?
The episode is titled “The Hollow of His Hand.” “The White Tiger Bares His Teeth” is a recap-style headline, not the episode’s official title. The story shifts the focus from the premiere’s action to the trial of Hector Ayala, the masked neighborhood vigilante known as the White Tiger.

Why is Hector Ayala on trial?
Matt Murdock represents Ayala, who is accused after an undercover officer dies during events surrounding a subway-platform altercation. Officer Powell’s account conflicts with the defense’s version of what happened. The defense also depends on Nicky Torres, a confidential informant whose testimony could help Matt challenge the case.
Torres does not give the full testimony Matt needs. With that route weakened, Matt makes a dramatic change of strategy: he reveals in court that Ayala is the White Tiger. The disclosure exposes Ayala’s masked identity to the public and lets Matt argue that Ayala has repeatedly helped people rather than simply posing a threat.

Why does Matt reveal Ayala’s identity?
Matt uses Ayala’s identity to reframe the trial. Instead of letting the case turn only on the accusation and conflicting accounts, he asks the jury to consider Ayala’s record of helping people. Witnesses describe Ayala’s rescue work, strengthening the argument that his actions have served his neighborhood.
The tactic is effective, but it crosses a personal boundary. Ayala tells Matt that the identity was not his secret to reveal. Matt’s choice also sits uneasily beside his advice that Ayala should leave crime-fighting behind if he is acquitted. Ayala rejects the idea that the White Tiger is merely a suit he can put away:
“Being the White Tiger is more than just putting on a suit. It’s who I am. It’s a calling. I didn’t choose it. It chose me. Might as well ask me to stop breathing.”

What happens to the White Tiger at the end of episode 3?
The jury acquits Ayala. He reunites with his wife, Soledad, and the verdict briefly offers the relief Matt’s defense sought. But Ayala returns to White Tiger activity, putting on the suit again. An unidentified shooter wearing a Punisher emblem kills him.
The emblem is not proof that Frank Castle is the shooter. The episode account leaves the killer’s identity unrevealed, so the ending establishes a connection to the Punisher symbol without confirming who was behind it.

How the trial connects to Fisk’s politics
Ayala’s case becomes a public argument over vigilantism, not just a dispute about one night on a subway platform. Fisk’s anti-vigilante rhetoric and mayoral politics form the wider backdrop: the trial gives the city a concrete example to debate as Fisk builds his political position. The episode links the private cost of Ayala’s calling to the broader struggle over who gets to define public safety in New York.
How episode 3 relates to the Daredevil comic arc
The Ringer reports that episodes 2 and 3 draw inspiration from the three-issue “Trial of the Century” story in Daredevil (1998), written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Manuel Gutierrez. The series shares the White Tiger trial premise but changes details, so the episode is better understood as drawing from the arc than as a direct adaptation.
