Damsel is a 2024 Netflix fantasy-adventure film in which Princess Elodie, played by Millie Bobby Brown, discovers that her arranged marriage is a trap: she has been chosen as a sacrifice to a fire-breathing dragon. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazeau, the film uses a familiar fairy-tale setup—the princess, the prince, the castle, and the dragon—but reverses nearly every expected role.

Rather than waiting for rescue, Elodie must survive a hostile underground world through observation, improvisation, and endurance. The film ultimately reveals that the dragon is not the central villain. The deeper threat is the royal institution that has preserved a cycle of deception and sacrifice for generations.

What is Damsel about?

In Damsel, Elodie is the daughter of a northern lord whose people are struggling with poverty and limited resources. She agrees to marry Prince Henry of Aurea, a wealthy kingdom whose royal family appears able to provide security for her homeland.

The wedding initially resembles the beginning of a conventional fairy tale. That impression disappears after the ceremony, when Elodie learns the real purpose of the marriage. The royal family has selected her as the latest sacrifice in an ancient pact with a dragon. She is taken to a cavern and thrown into the darkness below the kingdom, where she must find food, water, shelter, and a way out.

Her escape becomes more complicated when she discovers evidence of earlier victims and begins piecing together the history behind the ritual. The story is therefore less a romantic fantasy than a survival adventure with a fairy-tale surface. Its central question is not whether a princess will be rescued, but whether she can understand the system that has made her disposable—and decide what to do with that knowledge.

Netflix classifies the film as a PG-13 fantasy title. It contains creature violence, bloody images, peril, betrayal, and action sequences. The film was released on Netflix on March 8, 2024; Rotten Tomatoes also records a limited theatrical release on that date. Netflix lists the film at approximately 1 hour and 49 minutes, while Rotten Tomatoes lists 1 hour and 47 minutes, so runtime information varies slightly by platform.

Where to watch Damsel

Damsel was distributed as a Netflix title and the official Netflix page for Damsel provides the current viewing route. The U.S. title page lists streaming, offline downloads, English original audio, and multiple dubbed-audio and subtitle options. Catalog availability, subscription pricing, and language options can change by country and over time, so viewers should check the page for their region before watching.

There is no need to treat an unofficial “Damsel 2024 DVD” marketplace listing as the standard way to see the film. The available research identifies Netflix streaming as the established distribution path and does not verify an official DVD, Blu-ray, soundtrack, book tie-in, or licensed merchandise release.

Damsel cast and characters

Actor Character Role in the story
Millie Bobby Brown Princess Elodie A resourceful young woman forced to survive the dragon’s cavern and confront the royal family’s tradition.
Ray Winstone Elodie’s father The northern lord whose political and economic concerns shape Elodie’s decision to marry into Aurea’s royal family.
Robin Wright Queen Isabelle The political architect and defender of Aurea’s sacrifice system.
Angela Bassett Lady Bayford A woman who initially appears to fit the wicked-stepmother archetype but ultimately supports Elodie and Floria.
Nick Robinson Prince Henry The apparently charming prince whose wedding to Elodie is part of the sacrifice scheme.
Brooke Carter Princess Floria Elodie’s younger sister, who becomes vulnerable to the same system.
Shohreh Aghdashloo The dragon A wronged parent whose violence originates in an ancient betrayal rather than simple evil.

Millie Bobby Brown as Princess Elodie

Elodie begins the film as a dutiful daughter who accepts an arranged marriage because she believes it will help protect her people. Her character arc is not an instant transformation into an invincible warrior. Instead, she learns by surviving one immediate problem at a time: reading the cave, managing injuries, rationing resources, and interpreting the evidence left by previous sacrifices.

The film’s idea of female agency is consequently physical and practical. Elodie is frightened, exhausted, and repeatedly placed in danger, but she remains the person making decisions. Netflix’s production coverage says Brown performed substantial stunt work, including sword work and wire-assisted sequences. That account supports the film’s emphasis on a physically active heroine without requiring broader claims about the quality of the stunt execution.

Robin Wright as Queen Isabelle

Queen Isabelle is not merely a private schemer. She is the person who helps convert an old act of violence into a functioning political tradition. The director and Wright have described Isabelle as someone who believes she is protecting her kingdom and fulfilling a duty. That perspective does not excuse her actions, but it explains how the film’s system survives: cruelty is presented as responsibility, and inherited practice is treated as moral authority.

Wright’s association with Princess Buttercup from The Princess Bride also gives the casting a deliberate fairy-tale inversion. A performer strongly associated with a classic romantic princess now plays a queen who maintains a brutal dynastic arrangement.

Angela Bassett as Lady Bayford

Lady Bayford is one of the film’s clearest reversals of fairy-tale expectations. Her early presentation invites suspicion, and she can seem to occupy the familiar wicked-stepmother position. The film later reveals that she recognizes the marriage arrangement is dangerous and chooses to help Elodie and Floria.

Shohreh Aghdashloo as the dragon

The dragon is introduced as the obvious monster, but the film gradually gives her a history and a moral grievance. Aghdashloo’s voice conveys anger and grief as well as menace. The dragon remains responsible for killing people, and the film does not make that violence harmless. However, it changes the audience’s understanding of where the conflict began and who has deliberately kept it alive.

Spoilers: Damsel ending explained

The following section reveals the film’s major twists and ending.

Why does the royal family sacrifice princesses?

The royal family of Aurea claims to be paying an old debt to the dragon. The truth is more complicated. Generations earlier, Aurea’s ancestors killed the dragon’s three children. The dragon retaliated, and the two sides reached an arrangement involving royal sacrifices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rather than honestly maintaining that bargain, Aurea’s rulers manipulated the dragon. The royal family told her that the young women being delivered to the cavern carried royal blood. In reality, the sacrifices were selected through marriages to the royal family, allowing Aurea to preserve the appearance of repayment while sending other families’ daughters to die.

The ritual is therefore based on a lie. Its age and official status do not make it legitimate. It is an inherited institution designed to protect the ruling family by transferring the consequences of its ancestors’ actions onto outsiders.

How does Elodie survive the cavern?

Elodie’s survival depends on practical problem-solving rather than a single magical rescue. She studies the underground environment, searches for routes through the cavern, and uses whatever materials and information she can find. The cave becomes a record of earlier victims: their remains and belongings show her that she is not the first person to be abandoned there.

These discoveries also make the sacrifice system personal. Elodie is not simply escaping an unknown beast; she is seeing the accumulated human cost of a tradition that the royal family treats as routine.

Does Elodie kill the dragon?

No. Elodie returns to confront the dragon, but she ultimately chooses not to kill her. Instead, she reveals the deception behind the sacrifices and makes clear that the women sent into the cavern were not the royal bloodline the dragon believed she was receiving.

This decision is important because the film’s climax is not only a battle. Elodie has to choose between repeating the established logic of revenge and breaking the structure that sustains it. She recognizes the dragon’s original grievance without pretending that the dragon’s later violence caused no harm.

What happens to Prince Henry and Queen Isabelle?

While Elodie is dealing with the dragon and uncovering the truth, the royal family proceeds with the next stage of its plan. Elodie’s younger sister, Floria, is selected as a replacement sacrifice. Elodie escapes, returns to protect her sister, and confronts the royal family.

The dragon attacks the royal family during Prince Henry’s wedding. The sequence turns the royal ceremony—the setting that concealed the sacrifice system—into the place where that system collapses. Elodie, Floria, and Lady Bayford survive and return home together.

Why does the dragon travel with Elodie?

At the conclusion, the dragon travels alongside Elodie, Floria, and Lady Bayford as an ally. The ending does not mean that the dragon was secretly harmless. It means Elodie has redirected the conflict away from an endless exchange of victims and toward the people who engineered the deception.

The film’s most precise moral shift is from “the dragon is evil” to “the royal institution manufactured and perpetuated this conflict.” The dragon’s actions remain violent, but the royal family bears primary responsibility for turning an ancient grievance into a repeating system of sacrifice.

How Damsel reverses the traditional fairy tale

The prince is not the solution

Prince Henry’s charm is part of the trap. Marriage is not Elodie’s happy ending; it is the mechanism by which she is delivered to the dragon. The film uses the romance plot to expose how easily social expectations can disguise exploitation.

The princess saves herself

Elodie’s story rejects the passive-damsel formula. No prince enters the cavern to rescue her. Her progress comes from noticing details, tolerating discomfort, making mistakes, and continuing to act under pressure. The film’s empowerment argument works best when understood this way—not as a slogan about fearlessness, but as a depiction of agency exercised while afraid.

The stepmother is protective

Lady Bayford’s role challenges the assumption that an apparently cold or suspicious older woman must be an enemy. Her eventual support for Elodie and Floria shows that the film is interested in how quickly fairy-tale roles can mislead both characters and viewers.

The dragon is a wronged parent

The dragon is not transformed into a conventional hero. She has caused suffering, and her anger is dangerous. But giving her a history means the film refuses to treat her as an uncomplicated obstacle. The real ethical question becomes whether acknowledging the original injustice can stop the cycle without denying the damage caused by retaliation.

Major themes

Survival and agency

Elodie’s agency is expressed through repeated tactical choices: where to move, what to preserve, what evidence to trust, and when to risk confrontation. Her body is exhausted and injured, and the film gives survival a material cost. That makes her journey more specific than a generic “strong female character” narrative.

Inherited violence

Aurea’s leaders use tradition to make violence appear unavoidable. The sacrifice system is old, formalized, and politically useful, but none of those qualities makes it ethical. Damsel asks what happens when a society confuses continuity with justice.

Duty as an excuse

Queen Isabelle’s understanding of herself as a protector complicates the villainy without softening it. People inside an unjust institution may sincerely believe they are preserving order. The film’s warning is that a belief in duty can become a way to avoid examining who is being harmed.

Survival versus revenge

The climax rejects a simple revenge fantasy. Elodie could treat the dragon as the final enemy and complete the expected monster-slaying story. Instead, she identifies the lie that links the dragon and Aurea. Her choice favors truth and alliance over the continuation of dynastic punishment.

Production, design, and visual details

Exterior material for Aurea’s castle grounds and mountains was filmed in Portugal. The digitally created castle drew on Manueline architectural influences, giving the kingdom a distinctive historical and fairy-tale identity rather than presenting it as a generic medieval setting.

The costume design also supports the survival narrative. Netflix’s production coverage reports that approximately 70 versions of Elodie’s wedding dress were created to show its deterioration through her time in the cavern. The dress begins as a symbol of ceremony, wealth, and political presentation; as it tears and becomes dirty, it records the physical reality that the royal celebration is meant to conceal.

For viewers interested in the film’s technical production, Sony’s official “Shot on Sony” production page identifies Larry Fong as director of photography and the Sony VENICE as the camera system used to capture the film. That is a production fact, not by itself evidence of a particular image-quality result or camera performance claim.

Reception: popular on Netflix, mixed with critics

Damsel received a mixed critical response. At the time represented by the research, Rotten Tomatoes listed the film at 56% from 126 critics and 59% from more than 2,500 audience ratings. The figures can change, so they should be treated as a dated snapshot rather than permanent scores. The critics’ consensus praised Brown’s action-hero presence while criticizing the relative weakness of the story and some unconvincing visual effects. The audience summary similarly recognized the film as competently made and well led while pointing to predictability and effects limitations.

Its Netflix performance was substantially stronger than those aggregate scores might suggest. Netflix reported that Damsel was the number-one title on its English Films List for a second consecutive week, with 50.8 million views in the week of March 11, 2024 and 86.1 million views during its first 10 days. Netflix also said it reached number one in 87 countries and the Top 10 in 93.

Netflix’s all-time English-language movie ranking later placed Damsel at number 10 with 138 million views and approximately 253 million hours viewed. These are Netflix’s own platform-defined figures for the first 91 days after release. They are not box-office revenue, lifetime viewership across every service, or an independent audience measurement.

The gap is useful context: strong streaming reach does not necessarily indicate strong critical acclaim. The film has an instantly understandable premise, a recognizable lead performer, accessible action, and clear fairy-tale reversals. At the same time, critics and viewers who found the plotting conventional or the effects uneven had specific reasons to rate it less enthusiastically.

Is Damsel worth watching?

Damsel is most appealing to viewers who want a self-contained fantasy survival story, a modern revision of princess mythology, and a heroine whose solution comes from persistence rather than romantic rescue. Its strongest ideas are the reversal of fairy-tale roles and the relocation of moral responsibility from the apparent monster to the ruling system that created the conflict.

Viewers seeking a highly intricate fantasy world or a completely unpredictable plot may find the story more conventional than its premise suggests. The film is designed as an accessible adventure: its themes are clear, its emotional reversals are direct, and its central survival journey carries the film from beginning to end.

For a documentary and factual-film audience, the production details also offer useful points of interest: Portugal’s landscapes, Manueline-inspired design, the deliberately deteriorating wedding costume, and the use of the Sony VENICE camera all show how the film builds its fairy-tale world through physical and digital production choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Damsel a romantic fantasy movie?

Only in its setup. The arranged marriage and prince initially suggest a romantic fairy tale, but the film becomes a survival fantasy centered on Elodie’s escape, investigation, and moral choices.

Who is the real villain in Damsel?

The dragon is dangerous and has killed people, but the film places primary moral responsibility on Aurea’s royal family. Its rulers preserve a deceptive sacrifice system to protect their dynasty from the consequences of an ancestral crime.

Does Elodie survive in Damsel?

Yes. Elodie escapes the cavern, protects her sister Floria from becoming the next sacrifice, exposes the royal family’s deception, and leaves with Floria and Lady Bayford.

Is Damsel based on a book?

The supplied production information identifies Dan Mazeau as the screenwriter and does not establish a novelization or official book source. The film should therefore be described as a Netflix original film rather than as an adaptation of a verified book.

The Bottom Line

Damsel is a dark fairy-tale survival film built around a simple reversal: the princess is not waiting for rescue, and the dragon is not the whole story. Its mixed critical reception reflects conventional plotting and uneven effects, but its clear premise, Millie Bobby Brown’s central performance, and critique of inherited violence helped it become a major Netflix streaming success.
